The employers ask the Murcia City Council for help against the devastating effects of the coronavirus crisis in the hospitality industry (15/03/2020)

The Regional Federation of Hospitality and Tourism Entrepreneurs (HOSTEMUR) has addressed a letter to the Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, to convey the current situation of the sector, keep him permanently informed and to request close collaboration and support from the Murcia hospitality tourism sector.

Said letter speaks of the "greatest economic and social challenge in the history of democracy", before which the hoteliers of the city for "responsibility, civility and coherence" decided to go ahead and close their establishments.

"We are aware that the closure of the sector will be the great retaining wall for many citizens who confuse confinement with vacations, we have done it for our workers and for our clients," the letter states.

In this situation, employers see the need for the Murcia City Council to adopt measures to mitigate the devastating effects that this situation has on hospitality businesses, "most of them small."

The sector asks for small gestures to "raise the morale of the business community", such as the immediate suspension of the terrace occupancy rate by 2020, which would be a clear declaration of intent by the City Council towards businessmen who would serve as oxygen.

Other measures

"We are the main engine of the economy of the municipality and those who are most going to suffer this health crisis," says the president of the employers, Jesús Jiménez, who requests "courage to implement measures."

In addition to that small gesture that could be formalized immediately, the employers have requested other measures applicable to the financial year 2020, such as discounts on the water and garbage rate while the crisis lasts, and at the IBI in the hospitality premises for the owners of the establishment that they are owners or for the tenants that reduce the rental prices.

"We also call for the creation of a municipal contingency fund for aid to the sector, with funds to promote and carry out activities that have been canceled or not carried out," says Jiménez, who recalls that exemption from IAE payments has also been called for. hospitality premises.

Finally, the employers indicated in their letter to Ballesta the need to transmit an "image of union before the citizens", a task in which they assure that they will put all their effort.
