The reordering of the terraces in Alfonso X, a new problem for the hospitality industry of Murcia (07/03/2020)

The Association of Cafes, Bars and Allied of the Region of Murcia (ACBARM) adds a new negative situation for the sector in the capital of the Region: the reorganization of the terraces on the promenade of Alfonso X. After three years of work in the that the hoteliers of the surroundings have been deprived of their terraces, when the time has come for everyone to enjoy the renewed walk the reality is another.

“Now the area is wider, with more life, but the project of Mayor Ballesta is to reduce the space for the terraces.

It is a bad idea to which, at least, we asked for what we had ”, they complain from the association.

The hoteliers point out that this street has improved the value of their homes, but they also warn that at night it is now desolate, lifeless, an example that "the city is losing its opportunity in business development."

The ACBARM figures in almost 50% the reduction of the occupation in the establishments of Alfonso X during the works, some damages that have made very hard for the businessmen this period.

“Why make a citizen consultation now instead of applying the municipal ordinance?

It seems that the City Council bends to a few pressure groups that represent a few, even if that means hurting the hospitality industry.

We only demand that the criteria of the technicians be respected and the law is fulfilled, without entering into political rivalries, ”they point out.

An employer who appreciates and defends the position of the technical team of the Department of Public Road, which began the process to return the spaces to the terraces of the area that Mayor's office suspended.

“We believe that there is specific discrimination in this area because what is applied in the rest of the municipality is not being fulfilled.

This arbitrariness produces insecurity for entrepreneurs to undertake in the environment and encourages the fall in employment that we see in the latest data of the sector ”, they state.

Industry support

The ACBARM remarks that, however, there is no problem in the area to develop municipal activities in it, including the installation of loudspeakers in the lanterns for the broadcast of music in such acts.

"It is hard to believe that bars and cafes cause discomfort to neighbors, but those mass meetings do not," they are surprised at the association.

Given all this situation, the hoteliers ask for support to the sector.

“We want a lively, cheerful, outgoing and dynamic city, as it always has been.

Hospitality is the heart of Murcia, which gives it that open and attractive character that everyone loves.

We have reached a point where we need clear support from the institutions, which are committed to the sector instead of demonizing it, and we will support whoever does it, ”they conclude.
