Public Route approves by decree the redistribution of the space occupied with terraces in Alfonso X El Sabio (02/03/2020)

The Department of Commerce, Markets and Public Road has today approved by decree the redistribution of the space occupied with terraces on the Alfonso X El Sabio promenade in Murcia.

Government Board Agreement

Said decree, explained the head of the Department, Juan Fernando Hernández, obeys the instruction given by the agreement of the Governing Board of December 14, 2018 where it was arranged to provisionally authorize the occupation of this traditional avenue.

In the aforementioned agreement, the Government Board ordered the Urban Quality service to initiate the procedures for obtaining provisional authorizations as agreed in that same decree.

In addition, the Urban Quality service was ordered that, within six months from the signing of the decree (12/14/2018), the procedure to determine the final terraces model in Alfonso X El Sabio be completed, which would be the same for the rest of the walk once its pedestrianization is over.

An impeccable job

In this way, the mayor of Commerce, Markets and Public Road has highlighted "the impeccable work that the Urban Quality service has carried out taking into account the order of the Government Board (PP) of the past mandate, so it is incomprehensible the vote against the proposal of the technicians, as well as its subsequent delay and final refusal for approval. "

Positive feedback from the College of Architects

Likewise, the person in charge of Commerce, Markets and Public Road has recalled that the Association of Architects of the Region of Murcia (COAMU) has already valued as "adequate and proportionate" the space occupied by the terraces.

It also evaluated in a very positive way the complete liberalization of the central promenade that will allow both an unrestricted pedestrian circulation in Phase I and II, as well as the traditional placement of the booths of the different fairs or exhibitions that are held in the area.

In addition, following the recommendations of the College of Architects, much of the occupation at the mouth of Alfonso X is also released from Santo Domingo near the chamfer space.

Antagonistic visions

For Councilman Juan Fernando Hernández, the vote against this redistribution of space demonstrates two antagonistic city development models.

"On the one hand, the one promoted by the Mayor's Office, trying to avoid expectations of hospitality activity in Alfonso X El Sabio; and on the other, that of Citizens, that we understand that, provided that municipal ordinances are complied with, our obligation is to facilitate any activity that we pose entrepreneurs, the opposite would be arbitrary. "

Finally, the head of Commerce, Markets and Public Way has pointed out that "stopping the hospitality activity also stops the commercial because both go hand in hand, which causes an abandonment of urban centers through peripheral commercial areas. A vision of city that, in no way, we share. "
