The V Week of the Garden claims the products of proximity and Murcian gastronomy (02/03/2020)

More than 100 activities from Saturday 7 to Sunday 15 March, with the participation of about forty local groups, institutions and groups.

La Huerta as a living, productive and resilient ecosystem puts its raw materials at the service of show cooking, tastings, culinary routes, product shows, school workshops, conferences and projections.

Alquerías and Rincón de Seca are the two districts invited this year, with a specific program composed of exhibitions and workshops in cultural centers and schools, environmental and cycling routes, concerts, collective murals, etc.

The Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, presented today the V Week of the Huerta de Murcia, which will be held between Saturday, March 7 and Sunday, March 15, and which is the definitive consolidation of this initiative whose main objective is to show and bring citizens and visitors closer to the cultural and recreational background that keeps this ecosystem alive, productive and resilient.

"Coinciding with the Gastronomic Capital of Murcia 2020, this year the kitchen of the Huerta will acquire a fundamental role in the program, which has more than a hundred events and activities for the whole family, and the participation of about forty groups, local institutions and groups, "said Antonio Navarro.

"La Huerta are our roots, a return to the earth as a value of recognition of our own identity. That is why we work in the common defense of this living and shared environment, which stands out for its ecological and cultural uniqueness, and which is a essential part of the personality of the Murcian people, "reflected the councilor.

Alquerías and Rincon de Seca

As every year, there are two invited districts: Alquerías and Rincón de Seca, which will become the main protagonists of the week, with a specific program held in the districts themselves.

Thus, they will have exhibitions and workshops in their cultural centers and schools, environmental routes and cycling through their meanders, the celebration of a concert in Alquerías, and the realization of a great graffiti in each of them, as a reminder of the Celebration of the week, among many other activities.

"Murcia is the Garden of Europe. However, the Garden is much more than an agricultural resource; it is a beautiful legacy in which Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs and, especially, Murcia themselves, who have fought for centuries to maintain and defend this environment, facing natural disasters (such as floods) and economic (the fall of silk production), "said Antonio Navarro, who concluded that" we believe in a Murcia orchard with roots and alas, articulated in a management model that is sustained in our history and traditions and, at the same time, is projected successfully towards the future "

Gastronomy

This year, Huertana gastronomy occupies a central place in the program with culinary routes, show cooking and tastings, the exhibition of products, school workshops, conferences, projections, etc.

The 'Sample of organic products of the Huerta de Murcia', which has established itself as a showcase of the products of the Huerta in the heart of the city, will arrive on the weekend of March 14 and 15 at the Murcia River River Walk.

The 'Forum of dissemination and awareness of the Huerta de Murcia' will offer four talks distributed from Monday to Thursday, at the Romea Theater Headquarters and will have as its main theme the cuisine of the Huerta: its history, its traditional and avant-garde recipes, and the nutritional and dietary values ​​of its most representative products.

In addition, the 'Huerta Gastronomic Route' will be held again, with the participation of restaurants from practically all the districts of the Huerta, and with the commitment of the participants to make dishes made with proximity products and a greater presence of them in his letters, this being a perfect excuse to know the different districts.

It also highlights the 'Huertolab MÁSQUECHEF' school cooking workshop, with the participation of several schools, and preparation of dishes with proximity products, ecological and using sustainable kitchen systems, such as solar cooking.

The River Festival

In this fifth edition, on the one hand, the celebration of several events that have been held since the first editions is consolidated:

- 'Go ahead, you are at home'.

Guided visits to the tower houses and other heritage spread around the Garden.

- 'Photographic week of the Garden'.

Photo contest that this year will be focused on the traditional irrigation infrastructure of the Huerta.

- 'The River Festival'.

Closing event of the Week, Sunday, March 15, in the surroundings of the Manterola Footbridge.

With numerous workshops for the whole family, the show of products, the Biodiversity Fair, concerts and performances, and as a culmination: a great popular meal with free distribution of paella and beer.

On the other hand, and as new bets:

- For the first time, an inauguration event is held at the Contraparada Visitor Center, on Saturday, March 7, with children's and family workshops, and a talk about the Riada de Santa Teresa given by the documentary filmmaker Tomás García.

- Greater emphasis is placed on the workshops and talks held in schools of the main districts, but also in those that participated in other years to maintain the link with the Week.

- 'I March with Pets' on the Greenway of the South Coast, from Alquerías to Los Dolores, with the participation of host dogs of several protectors.

- In addition, and as a new great bet, this year a new informative stand, inspired by a ditch, is launched and that seeks to make visible the passage of the 'Acequia Mayor Aljufía' under our feet and that crosses the center of the city of Murcia .

More than 125,000 m2 of assets recovered

From 2015 to date, the City of Murcia, through the Plan of Action of the Garden, is making possible the recovery of more than 125,000 m2 of historical heritage: the slope of the Castle of Monteagudo (60,000m2, concluded the expropriation of the land), the Molino del Batán, Zarandona (6,100, action completed), the Molino del Amor, the Albatalía (3,700, in execution), Molino de la Pólvora, Rincón de Beniscornia-Guadalupe (940, in execution) and Casa Torre Falcón (185, project under development), the acquisition of Castillejo and Hondón (34,592 m² completed action) and the Almunia del Rey Lobo (3,000 m² recent archaeological excavations).

From La Contraparada to the world: new Visitor Center

On the other hand, the City Council has put into service the Visitor Center of La Contraparada, the reference point for the dissemination of the natural, cultural, landscape and historical legacy of the Huerta de Murcia, which has the latest innovations and provides information for know the origins of the Huerta and La Contraparada, declared of Cultural Interest.

The property is an interactive garden museum open to the world.
