'Star of the disclosure', the UMU contest that seeks new talent in social networks (28/02/2020)

The Unit of Scientific Culture of the University of Murcia (UMU) launches the first edition of the contest 'Star of the disclosure': a contest through which it is intended to find new instagramers and youtubers that give science the prominence it deserves.

For those who get it, there is at stake a First Prize of 1200 euros and an Accésit of 600.

Social networks have established themselves as the perfect dissemination tool for young people, and from the UMU an ideal platform for disseminating and enjoying science has been seen in them.

Specifically, the social networks chosen for this event have been YouTube and Instagram.

The participants of the contest must find their place in these channels, creating their own informative identity and promulgating scientific knowledge with rigor, without leaving aside other elements of the networks such as humor, entertainment and originality.

The format used to explain the theme is also optional, being able to apply different genres such as music, monologue or theater, among others.

How to take part

The contest is organized in two phases.

In the first one, the participant must create a YouTube channel, in case they do not already have their own, and upload the video made for the contest, incorporating the title, description and tags they consider.

Once the video is uploaded, you will have until March 20 to send the link to the email of the UCC + i: ucc@um.es.

At the end of the registration period, the jury, composed of members of the UCC + i and a disseminator with national recognition, will select the five best audiovisuals received to move on to the final phase of the contest.

In this final phase, the people selected by the jury must incorporate Instagram, through their personal account or from an account created for the contest.

They will have to disseminate both the video sent in the first phase and other audiovisual content with the same theme, being able to publish fragments of the video, stories, photographs and texts of their own elaboration in relation to the selected discipline.

Commitment to disclosure

Disclosure can be understood as the activity that interprets scientific knowledge and brings it closer to the general society with rigor and certainty.

That is why, among the objectives of this event, is the fight to eradicate the bulos and fake news.

Daniel Mediavilla, a journalist for Materia (El País), believes that the consumption of audiovisual material is increasing exponentially, and that new generations demand more videos, especially on platforms such as YouTube. In the case of Instagram, it is a very visual network and dynamic in which the contents are shared very easily, which facilitates the dissemination of the message.

With the choice of these networks for the contest that are mainly characterized by virality, we grant the user the opportunity to develop the critical spirit when consuming scientific content while pursuing the objective of this type of initiatives: disseminate science in a creative, original and rigorous way, reaching an increasingly wide audience.

This project has the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) Ministry of Science and Innovation.
