The City Council requests the renewal of the recognition of Murcia as a Child Friendly City of UNICEF (27/02/2020)

The municipal Plenary approved in its session this morning to request UNICEF Spanish Committee the start of the procedures for Murcia to obtain the recognition of Child Friendly City 2020-2024.

It must be remembered that this seal with which UNICEF recognizes the development of effective policies to improve the quality of life of children has already been granted to the municipality for the period 2016-2020.

UNICEF grants this distinction after an evaluation process to municipalities and institutions, in which it is analyzed that the lines of action of municipal policy in relation to childhood and adolescence conform to certain quality requirements.

The Child Friendly Cities Program (CAI) promoted by UNICEF Spanish Committee, the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and the University Institute for Childhood and Adolescence Needs and Rights (IUNDIA), aims to promote and promote the application of the Convention on the Rights of the Child at the local level, promote the participation of children and adolescents in all issues that affect them, and encourage networking among the various municipalities that are part of this initiative.

The goal is to design and implement effective public policies to improve the well-being of children, defending their rights, encouraging their participation and making cities more livable environments, especially for the youngest.

Remember that today the Plenary has also approved the 2019-2022 Children's Plan, the roadmap of the set of actions that will be developed in the municipality of Murcia for social promotion, care and protection for children and adolescents with an estimated budget of 102,286,094 million euros.

The objective is to give prominence to minors and guarantee their well-being around the principles of equality, full inclusion and social integration.

Since 2012, the City of Murcia has carried out a specific program of attention to children and adolescents so that these principles prevail, favoring awareness in all services and participation in local networks.
