The City of Murcia has received the ISO 50001 certification of the Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification (AENOR) for the energy management of five of its municipal facilities: the town hall, the Abenarabi building, the Plaza Europa building, the Local Development Agency and the Moneo.

The council achieves this certification through the European Project H2020 COMPETE4SECAP, which during 2019 has guided the City Council in the certification process, with the collaboration of the European Programs Service, the Smart Murcia Office, the Department of Industrial Engineering and the Local Energy Agency of Murcia.

"This certification guarantees the correct management of the energy consumed in our facilities, where we continue working to reduce consumption and increase user comfort," said Mercedes Bernabé, Councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government, on which the Service depends of European Programs.

During the implementation process, in which the energy consumption of these buildings has been analyzed and the necessary legal requirements have been studied together with an inventory and audit work, it has been possible to save 5% in electricity consumption in such buildings (136,344 kWh), assuming a saving of emissions of more than 56 tons of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere, and a saving of 20,000 euros.

Along with the Department of Urban Agenda, there is also the Urban Development and Modernization Administration, which is directed by José Guillén, who is responsible for the competencies of the Smart City MiMurcia project, in addition to the Department of Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarrese.

The visit of Canada and Croatia

A delegation from Guelph (Canada) and Rijeka (Croatia) visited Murcia in November in the International Urban Cooperation (IUC) to exchange experiences in the implementation of ISO 50001, as well as learn about the management of different European R&D projects in the municipality of Murcia.

ISO 50001 is the standard that regulates energy management in companies.

This certification establishes a series of procedures and records on energy issues through a work of gathering information in different areas, such as air conditioning, energy, electricity, maintenance or legalization of facilities.
