Esther Nevado: "Murcia is not yet a safe space for sexual diversity and without money for the LGTBI Law it will never be" (24/02/2020)

The Socialist Municipal Group presents a motion to the next Plenary demanding that the government team do everything in their power to implement compliance with the LGTBI Law and apply concrete measures such as the creation of a specific municipal commission for it

The LGTBI Law of the Region of Murcia was born in 2016, the result of a spirit of consensus of all the political groups represented in the Regional Assembly.

He counted on the votes of the entire regional parliamentary arch, including, of course, those of the Popular Party and Citizens, which soon led the way.

We thus position ourselves at the forefront of rights for LGTBI people.

Or so it seemed, because the truth is that today we can say that everything was in a declaration of intentions that never materialized, explains the socialist councilor Esther Nevado.

"For the laws to be effective they need budgetary endowment. They need financing and this Law has never had it, and in view of the draft of regional budgets for 2020 nothing will change because we are facing budgets kidnapped by the ideological bias of the right more conservative that will not allow a single euro to be allocated to the development of the actions it collects and that need financing to be carried out, "says the Socialist mayor.

According to Nevado, "although we have been advancing and taking important steps forward in this area, the municipality of Murcia is not yet a safe space for sexual diversity and without applying the LGBTI law it will never be. It is necessary to invest in education to the citizenship in respect and tolerance towards all people to make Murcia a truly tolerant and diverse society. "

For these reasons, Nevado presents a motion in the next plenary session in which he requires the City Government team to apply a series of measures to achieve the application of the LGTBI law.

"The first thing we demand from the municipal government is that it fulfill its functions and demand from the regional government the sufficient economic endowment to guarantee the development of the articles of the LGTBI Law. Ballesta has to face López Miras and demand that he simply comply with the law" , explains the socialist mayor.

Likewise, "we are going to urge the City Council of Murcia to launch a specific Municipal Commission dedicated to this issue that reviews the proper compliance in the municipality of Law 8/2016," adds Nevado.

"And, of course, to express their entire commitment to combat attitudes that go against these rights," he adds.
