The City Council lays the foundations of the new Mobility Model and awards the reorganization of urban transport (19/02/2020)

The contract for the 'Reorganization study of urban transport in the city of Murcia' has been signed, which will allow the elaboration of the new Murcia 2030 Mobility Plan. The analysis of 1,580 stops and 40 lines that make up the network begins of public transport of the municipality, which last year moved 18 million passengers in a total of 584,000 expeditions.

In addition 5,000 surveys will be conducted.

Tranvibus Line 1 provides 1.5 million trips per year.

Specifically, this line will connect La Arrixaca with Floridablanca, in a route of 6.2 km and 15 minutes long.

The commissioning of the Tranvibús will prevent the emission of 15,500 kg of CO2 daily.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, chaired today the meeting of the Technical Commission for Mobility and Transport of the City of Murcia, which addressed the latest advances in the Mobility Plan and the implementation of new 100% sustainable means of transport such as the tram.

José Ballesta informed that “yesterday we proceeded to sign the contract for the award of the 'Reorganization study of urban transport in the city of Murcia', which will allow us to prepare the new Murcia 2030 Mobility Plan”.

Through this technical assistance, with an allocation budget of 212,139 euros, the document will be prepared that will collect the technical service project that will serve as the basis for the future tender of urban and metropolitan public transport in the municipality of Murcia.

Specifically, the technical assistance will analyze the 1,580 stops and 40 lines that make up the network of the public transport network of the municipality of Murcia, which last year moved 18 million passengers between urban buses, intercity buses and the tram, with a total of 584,000 expeditions.

15 minutes from La Arrixaca to Floridablanca

Within the new Mobility Model, the Technical Transportation Commission evaluated the implementation of the first line of the Tranvibús and its integration into the public transport network of the municipality of Murcia.

The City Council foresees that the commissioning of the Tranvibús will prevent the emission of more than 15,500 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere daily.

Specifically, the first line will depart from the Virgen de La Arrixaca University Hospital and will reach Floridablanca Street, “offering a sustainable, fast and quality public transport, with an initial estimate that exceeds 1.5 million annual travelers, which invites you to abandon the use of private vehicles and use public transport, a new possibility for the residents of El Palmar and El Carmen, ”said José Ballesta.

During the event, the presentation video of the Tranvibús was projected, technically referred to as Fast Transit Bus (BTR), which will serve nearly one million people in the metropolitan area of ​​Murcia and will have five stops: Floridablanca, La Arrixaca , El Palmar, Aljucer and San Pío / Barriomar.

Trams in Eindhoven, Amsterdam, Reims and Vitoria

This system of collective transport has already been implemented in other cities, such as Eindhoven (Netherlands), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Reims (Francis) and Vitoria (Spain), where it is currently being implemented.

In Murcia, the first line of the Tranvibús will connect the hamlet of El Palmar, where 23,000 inhabitants reside, with the Barrio del Carmen, where 20,000 inhabitants reside;

a 6.2-kilometer route that will start at the Virgen de La Arrixaca University Hospital and will reach Floridablanca Street, which will last between 12 and 15 minutes.

When leaving from La Arrixaca, this Rapid Transit Bus will offer a new way of traveling for the workers, family and patients of the Murcia hospital of reference.

For its part, Floridablanca Street, located in Barrio del Carmen, has been chosen because of its proximity to the Train Station and the future AVE.

The meeting of the Technical Committee on Mobility and Transport, which also addressed the next convocation of the Transportation Board on February 26, was attended by the Councilor for Development, Mario Gómez, the Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez , and the Councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government, Mercedes Bernabé.

More than 5,000 surveys and interviews with pedáneos

The 'Study of urban transport reorganization of the city of Murcia' that has been awarded contemplates the carrying out of more than 5,000 surveys, with an innovative segmentation system that increases the quality of the results obtained and guarantees citizen participation in the future Plan of Mobility.

For this, the type and territorial distribution of the respondents will be taken into account according to the mobility results obtained from the mobile terminals (georeferencing), so that both data sources are compatible and enrich their merger.

In addition, interviews will also be conducted with the Presidents of the Municipal Boards about the mobility needs of the inhabitants of the different districts and neighborhoods of the municipality of Murcia.

Work phases of the Technical Assistance

The technical assistance will follow a work process, in which the following phases will be differentiated:

1.-Data collection and management, and definition of the scope of study.

c) Characterization of mobility.

2.-Development of a public transport model.

a) Definition of the urban transport management base network.

b) Transport model calibration.

3.-Diagnosis of the current situation.

4.-Temporary scenarios.

5.-Definition of network alternatives.

6.-Modeling and evaluation of alternatives.

Estimation of the basic parameters of supply, demand and network coverage.

7.-Development of the proposed solution.

European financing

For the implementation of the new means of sustainable transport, the City of Murcia has requested regional, national and European financing, through different lines of aid.

Specifically, for the implementation of the tramway, financing has been requested through the program 'A local entities for investment projects in low carbon economy' to the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDEA), the public business entity attached to the Ministry for Ecological Transition through the Secretary of State for Energy.

In addition to financing for Line 1 of the El Palmar-Floridablanca Streetcar, aid has been requested for the project to create two dissuasive car parks in the northern part of the city of Murcia and two other deterrent car parks in the eastern and southern areas of The city of Murcia.

Aid has also been requested for the installation of photovoltaic solar canopies in the municipal space in C / Ambassador Inocencio Arias for self-consumption of educational buildings / administration, municipal space in Avenida Juan de Borbón y Zaraiche.
