The PSOE proposes a "safe bus stops" service for women and girls during night trips (18/02/2020)

The socialist councilor Teresa Franco points out that cities such as Vigo, Bilbao, Seville, Tarrasa, Zaragoza, Ibiza, Madrid or Malaga have already implemented this system, which would consist of asking the bus driver to get off at a specific point in the route, even if it does not match with a stop, as a prevention measure

The Socialist Municipal Group considers a specific service of "safe stops" of public transport necessary for people who are in a situation of vulnerability, specifically women and girls who feel insecure at night.

The socialist councilor Teresa Franco, who presents a motion for the next plenary session in this regard, states that the lack of local police officers found, the dispersion of the municipality of Murcia with a wide geography and, in some cases quite intricate with garden lanes or unbuilt areas, and streets with poor lighting require the development of measures that protect public transport users.

In addition, he points out that "we have to develop policies with a gender perspective, that is, our decisions must take into account the specific problems and needs of women and girls and respond to them."

Of course, he adds, "one of the most serious and pressing problems is violence against women and girls and in order to prevent it, a strong individual and collective commitment is needed on a daily basis."

The councilor recalls that the nights are the moments of greatest vulnerability, "we know that the darkness favors criminal acts and this, together with the lack of police forces that we suffer in Murcia and a lower presence of people on public roads can do, by for example, that women feel insecure when they wait at the bus stop or when they get off the bus and have to make a considerable journey until they reach their destination. "

Therefore, "an administration such as the City of Murcia must provide women with resources to make them feel safer and avoid situations of risk as much as possible, so that the implementation of a safe stop service on schedule Nocturnal is one of those political decisions that take into account the needs of women, "emphasizes Franco.

It also warns that in countries such as France and Germany, as well as in cities such as Vigo, Bilbao, Seville, Tarrasa, Zaragoza, Ibiza, Madrid or Malaga, this system has already been implemented, which would consist of a woman asking the driver for a bus get off at a specific point along the route, even if it does not coincide with a stop as a preventive measure.

For all these reasons, Teresa Franco, who indicates that this measure would not modify the route of a bus line, asks the Plenary to prepare a study, with the collaboration of traffic and the area of equality, to establish this service of "stops on demand" or "safe stops" and that this study also be contributed to the Transportation Bureau.
