Murcia releases the Metrominuto, the new form of 100% sustainable urban mobility (18/02/2020)

José Ballesta presents this pedestrian guide-plane, with an aesthetic similar to a subway plane, which allows to know the estimates of real times for walking on foot within the urban area.

"Murcia is a city of a size and characteristics perfect for walking, both for the monumental and green itineraries that cross the city, as for the temperature and climate, with the consequent benefits for health and daily living," said the mayor.

In the last year, the City Council has put into service 300,000 m2 of healthy and pedestrian spaces.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Youth and Sustainable Mobility, Rebeca Pérez, and the Councilor for Sports and Health, Felipe Coello, presented today the Metrominuto, the new way to travel and interact with the city 100% sustainable , which puts the pedestrian as the protagonist of urban mobility.

“People are the protagonists of the new mobility model that we are developing for the municipality of Murcia.

The initiative that we present today is another step is that process of transformation in which we are immersed, and that is changing the way we move, interact and live a social experience with the city;

betting on sustainable and healthy displacements, â€said José Ballesta.

Metrominuto shows, as a metro plan, the distances and times walking between the main streets and squares of the heart of the city, covering a total area of 11 km2 and an approximate perimeter of 13.6 km.

This pedestrian guide-plane, with an aesthetic similar to a subway plane, allows you to know the estimates of real times for walking trips within the municipality, with indications about the location of green areas, hospitals, tourist points and the main connections of urban transport: deterrent parking, bus and tram, so that each Murcia or visitor can plan their trips.

10,000 daily steps

José Ballesta said that “Murcia is a city of a size and characteristics perfect for walking, both for the monumental and green itineraries that cross the city, as for the temperature and climate, with the consequent benefits for health and daily living "

This initiative for the promotion of sustainable mobility encourages Murcia to move around the city on foot, inviting them to walk at least 10,000 steps a day recommended by WHO, with marked displacements in different colors with sections that mark a time and distance approximate

Just around the corner

The plane 'Metrominuto.

Around the corner 'will be distributed in different points of tourist interest in the city (hotels, visitor service centers, etc.) as well as in public spaces of the municipality (municipal centers, museums, etc.).

The initial circulation is 2,000 brochures.

Limiting the activity in a schedule from 6 in the morning to 12 at night, Metrominuto establishes four parameters:

•Health wellness

Average distances are stipulated to represent the steps we can take in our daily journey, obtaining as a consequence greater physical and mental well-being, including benefits such as reducing cardiovascular risk and stress.

• Sustainability / environment

The graph also represents an average distance that contributes positively to the environment by not using our motor vehicle and we transmit with our activity a social awareness that favors the increase in the number of people who opt for a healthy way of moving.

• Culture / experiences

Another statistical parameter represents our time dedicated to cultural experiences.

Inside a vehicle we do not see beyond a space of a few m2, due to the area of vision and the speed of travel, which forces us to focus our attention solely on the circulation.

When walking we perceive visual stimuli of the environment that surrounds us: architecture, heritage, landscape, activities in the street or in establishments through which we pass.

Our visual field expands and we are able to discover spaces that we overlooked and make our tour much more interesting.

• Sociability / Smart City

The fourth parameter shows us another way of living the city on foot.

We have obtained an average time in which we reflect the opportunities provided by walking through the city.

When we walk, we integrate as pedestrians in a social community, we favor communication, closeness and socialize more.

About 300,000 m2 of pedestrian spaces

In the last year, the City Council has put into service 300,000 m2 of healthy and pedestrian spaces: the pedestrianization of Alfonso X El Sabio Avenue and its monumental axis (50,000 m2), Murcia Río (65,000 m2) and the Vía Verde (40,000 m2 ), and the green lung in the western part of the city (70,000 m2), which will connect this spring the gardens of Salitre, Silk, Rocío and the historic Huerto López-Ferrer.

"We give priority to healthy itineraries and traveling on foot and by bicycle, improving the quality of life of Murcian families and betting on sustainability," said José Ballesta, who added that "one of the development vectors of the municipality of Murcia , endorsed by the Social Council, is the environment and sustainable mobility, a growth model that we are developing through a concrete battery of actions such as the commitment to the bicycle, the Clean Air Strategy, Climate Change Mitigation, of Electric vehicle or pedestrianization of public spaces â€.
