Four new deterrent parking lots will decongest traffic in downtown (14/02/2020)

The new facilities will allow the creation of more than 1,300 new places and reduce 1.8 tons of CO2 per year to the atmosphere.

The Government Board requests European funds for these parking lots that will have solar panels to also reduce the energy consumption of four municipal buildings

The Governing Board has approved this morning two projects to be financed by the European Regional Development Fund ERDF 2014-2020, which will allow the construction of four new deterrent car parks, in order to reduce traffic congestion, avoid CO2 emissions and contribute to increased use of public transport.

These new facilities will be located in the south east and north areas of the municipality, specifically, on Juan de Borbón, Almirante Loaysa, Miguel Ángel Blanco and Ambassador Inocencio Arias avenues.

In total, 1,368 parking spaces will be offered that will be interconnected with the town center through public transport.

This action, and according to previous studies, will save a total of 1,816,521 kilograms of CO2 into the atmosphere and will reduce the number of vehicles that access the center of Murcia and prevent traffic congestion.

The Almirante Loaysa avenue parking will occupy a space of 8,621 square meters and of the 346 parking spaces it will offer, 9 will be for people with reduced mobility.

The new installation of Miguel Ángel Blanco Avenue, with Morera Street, with 426 places (9 for people with reduced mobility) will be built on an area of 9,853 square meters.

On Ambassador Inocencio Arias Avenue, with Miguel Vivancos Street, 367 new parking spaces (9 for people with reduced mobility) will be enabled, on a plot of 8,933 square meters.

Finally, the new deterrent car park on Avenida Juan de Borbón, with Avenida Nuestra Señora de Atocha, will offer 229 spaces (5 for people with reduced mobility) in an area of 5,476 square meters.

The technical characteristics of the car parks will include controlled access systems to the parking area, 24-hour security and surveillance system, equipment for free recharging of electric vehicles, LED lighting with remote management, connection with shared electric mobility systems in the immediate vicinity. (scooter, bicycle and motorcycle) and access to public transport nearby.

The bidding base budget for the four car parks amounts to 1,508,384 euros and the execution period is three months, so, according to forecasts, they can be put into operation at the beginning of 2021.

The benefits of its implementation will be the following:

- Reduce road traffic in the urban center of Murcia, improving air quality

- They will be oriented to favor intermodality and connect their users with public transport services, shared electric mobility systems such as bicycles, motorcycles, etc ...

- Offer free recharge for electric vehicles

- Revitalize the urban environment in its vicinity.

The City Council is thus advancing in the structuring of the municipality through its mobility project, which will allow the creation of an efficient transport system and will bring great benefits to citizens.

In addition, the City Council continues to advance in its strategic lines of Clean Air supporting measures that allow raising the environmental quality for the residents of the municipality, achieving a decarbonized city through a significant reduction of polluting emissions.

Canopies with photovoltaic solar installation

The car parks of Juan de Borbón Avenue and Ambassador Inocencio Arias Avenue will also have photovoltaic solar installations for power generation for self-consumption.

This will allow the Abenarabi Public Services Building and the CEIP Nuestra Señora de Atocha, the Center for Municipal Initiatives and the CEIP Nuestra Señora de Belén to supply energy.

This project estimates a capacity for 449.79 kWp in the parking lot of Ambassador Arias Avenue and 277.76 kWp in Juan de Borbón Avenue, 727.55 kWp in total to provide electric power to the 4 municipal centers.

Thus, the Juan de Borbón avenue parking plant will reduce CO2 emissions by 144.12 tons while the Ambassador Inocencio Arias avenue will reduce them by 231.02 tons.

In this way, through this project, it is possible to integrate renewable energy sources mainly in public equipment aimed at reducing the electrical consumption of nearby municipal buildings.

The purpose of these grants from the European Regional Development Fund FEDER 2014-2020 is to encourage and promote the performance of actions by Spanish municipalities or groups formed by municipalities belonging to the same autonomous community, in addition to the cities of Ceuta and Melilla , which reduce carbon dioxide emissions through the execution of unique projects for energy saving and efficiency, sustainable urban mobility and the use of renewable energy, in accordance with the provisions of the FEDER Operational Program for Sustainable Growth 2014-2020.

The Department of Sustainable Mobility and Youth, directed by Rebeca Pérez, is the coordinator of this project in collaboration with the European Programs service, under the Department of Urban Agenda and Open Government, directed by Mercedes Bernabé.

Murcia now has 650 spaces in 24-hour guarded parking lots: 104 next to the Fuenteblanca school in Juan de Borbón (opened in October 2016), 346 next to La Arrixaca (available since May 2016), 100 places enabled in La Condomina (in April 2015), and another hundred open in the City of Justice in June 2015.
