The University of Murcia welcomes on February 13 and 14, 207 US scholars, including university professors, predoctoral and postdoctoral researchers, master students and conversation assistants.

The Commission for Cultural, Educational and Scientific Exchange between Spain and the United States of America (Fulbright Commission), in collaboration with the UMU, thus celebrates the evaluation seminar of the American Fulbright fellows who are this year in Spain and Andorra, and announces the opening of the call for Fulbright scholarships to expand studies in the United States for the 2021-2022 academic year.

The inauguration of scheduled events will take place this Thursday, February 13, at the Romea Theater in Murcia, at 9 am and will be attended by José Luján, rector of the UMU;

José Ballesta, mayor of Murcia;

Miguel Motas, Employment, Research and Universities advisor of the CARM;

Spencer Cryder, deputy cultural advisor to the United States embassy;

Leticia Pico, co-treasurer of the Fulbright Commission and Alberto López, executive director of the Fulbright Commission.

The Fulbright Program, the most prestigious of all exchange programs at the graduate level and the only one that has the endorsement of the Governments of Spain and the United States, has been granting scholarships based on academic excellence for more than 60 years.

In recognition of its international character and its commitment to foster cooperation and understanding values, the Fulbright Program was recognized with the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation in 2014.

The seminar

The objective of the conference is to evaluate academically the projects of the fellows and their integration into Spanish society.

For this purpose, they will participate in work sessions on the different aspects of their experience, their social and academic involvement, as well as on the difficulties overcome and the achievements.

It is also intended to publicize the city and region they visit.

Therefore, the scholars will also enjoy different cultural and leisure activities aimed at complementing their knowledge of the city of Murcia.

Call for scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year

Currently, the call for up to 20 scholarships for Spanish higher graduates who wish to pursue postgraduate studies at universities in the United States in any discipline is open, beginning in 2021. The deadline for receiving applications is April 14, 2020. Complete information on this call is available on the website www.fulbright.es.

To publicize this opportunity and other calls for interest that will be launched this year, the Fulbright Commission plans to hold two informative conferences in parallel with the seminar on the two campuses of the University of Murcia.

The Commission

For sixty-two years, the Commission administers the Fulbright scholarships, from which 5,680 Spanish and 3,449 American scholars have benefited.

The Program, present in more than 160 countries, seeks that the fellows know in depth the society they visit, thus promoting both respect and coexistence among peoples and the mobility of talent in a scenario of globalization.

The success of the Fulbright Program is endorsed by its former fellows, many of whom today are prominent members of society who enjoy recognized prestige in their profession.

These include writers in the category of Ana María Matute or Miguel Delibes;

scientists like Mariano Barbacid or Federico García Moliner;

filmmakers like Carlos Saura or Daniel Sánchez-Arévalo;

politicians like Javier Solana or Josep Borrell;

journalists such as Guillermo Fesser or Montserrat Domínguez;

in addition to 60 Nobel prizes, 6 Prince of Asturias awards and more than a dozen National awards.

The Commission is bi-national, is governed by representatives of the two countries and co-chaired by senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation and the United States Embassy in Spain and Andorra, which have the mission of monitoring and setting the objectives. annual

It is financed with the funds allocated each year by both governments and also has the support of several ministries, regional governments and Spanish companies.

Relationship between the Fulbright program and the University of Murcia

The relationship between the Fulbright Commission and the University of Murcia has been intense since the signing of the cooperation agreement for the incorporation of Fulbright professors and researchers in 2017. Since then five American professors who have carried out their teaching and research projects have participated in the program in various departments of the University.

Both institutions are confirming that this program contributes to bilingualism, strengthens the programs taught in English and establishes lasting research links between the University of Murcia and American universities.

Therefore, during this seminar an addendum to the existing agreement will be signed that will contemplate the incorporation of six additional professors for the 2021-2022 academic year.

The University of Murcia also has a large number of students and professors who have been able to enjoy a Fulbright scholarship in the US, specifically, 40 UMU students have had a Fulbright scholarship, and 16 of them are now professors.

Two students are currently in the US, one of them studying Public Health at Columbia University, and another is conducting an Oceanography research project at the University of California, San Diego.

On the other hand, a professor of Philology will go this month to research at the University of Utah, and a student has also been selected to be a Spanish reader at an American university, with her scholarship scheduled to begin in September of this year.
