About 80 students of Juan XXIII school join the Forest Plan with the planting of new trees (11/02/2020)

The children helped the municipal operators to repopulate the patio with a total of 63 copies and received a didactic talk about the advantages of the activity.

José Guillén: "The Forest Plan is the roadmap that will mark urban environmental and landscape planning in the next decade, with which the City of Murcia will double the number of trees in the municipality, reaching 200,000 copies."

The Councilor for Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, José Guillén, along with Pedanías y Barrios, Marco Antonio Fernández, attended today the planting of new trees in the Juan XXIII school of El Ranero, within the 2030 Forest Plan, in the 75 students of 6th grade of Primary Education have participated.

“This strategy will allow more than 20,000 schoolchildren from a hundred schools in our municipality to have new shadow spaces,†says José Guillén.

Specifically, students have helped municipal operators in planting a total of 63 trees, including 31 specimens of bauhinia, known as the 'orchid tree, another 26 of' paulownia tomentosa 'and 6 mulberry trees, from the genus 'morus alba'.

In the words of José Guillén, “the Forest Plan represents the roadmap that will mark urban environmental and landscape planning in the next decade, with which the City of Murcia will double the number of trees in the municipality, reaching 200,000 copies†.

In addition to participating in tree planting, students received a didactic explanation about the contribution of this activity and the advantages of the Forest Plan for the improvement of the environment.

The Juan XXIII school is the second time that it participates in the planting of specimens.

He already did it a few months ago on the occasion of Teacher's Day.

First performance

The 2030 Forest Plan will involve the planting of some 2,000 new specimens distributed in a hundred schools in the municipality, new shadow spaces that can be enjoyed by some 20,000 schoolchildren.

The Pintor Pedro Cano school in El Palmar hosted last November the first performance in an educational center.

The project is being carried out in various phases so as not to interfere with the activity of the schools.

This municipal strategy is being developed in other environments such as Murcia Río, districts, parks and gardens, medium and roundabouts, in addition to Terra Natura.

Native trees have priority

In this municipal strategy, priority is given to the planting of native varieties, which adapt to the climate of the municipality and its thermal individuals –Murcia is characterized by having a large temperature difference between day and night, up to 14 degrees, during the Spring and autumn months.

In addition, at the time of being planted, deciduous trees will have preference, since they reduce the effects of global warming and nourish and fertilize the soil, and bet on planting specimens at street level - lined with alignment -, with the objective to provide more shadow spaces to pedestrians.

In urban environments, trees reduce the effects of climate change and lower CO2, lower temperature, favor biodiversity and beautify the landscape.
