Murcia opens its first basketball court with recycled glass, thanks to the Ecovidrio campaign (11/02/2020)

José Ballesta inaugurates the outer court of the Prince of Asturias Pavilion made with recycled glass thanks to the high participation of Murcia in the 'Encesta glass, we all win' initiative.

This initiative has involved the collection of more than 18 tons of glass in the Region, raising awareness of more than one million Murcians about the importance of recycling.

In Murcia, more than 6 million glass were recycled in 2018. This is the second track in Spain with these characteristics, made exclusively with glass from recycling and with a resin finish.

The city of Murcia has the first basketball court made of recycled glass from the Region of Murcia, which today opened its doors in the outer area of ​​the Prince of Asturias pavilion.

The 'Encesta glass, we all win' campaign.

Murcia has been the winning municipality of this initiative promoted by Ecovidrio, the regional government and the Basketball Federation of the Region of Murcia, which has collected more than 18 tons of glass between the ball-shaped containers, which were installed This past fall in a total of 12 Murcia municipalities.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, today inaugurated this innovative and sustainable basketball court, an act that has been attended by the Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, and the Councilor for Sports and Health, Felipe Coello.

In addition, the general director of the Environment, Francisco Marín, the president of the Basketball Federation, Juan Carlos Hernández, and the director of Marketing of Ecovidrio, Borja Martiarena, as well as players of the UCAM Murcia CB and Real Murcia Basketball teams .

The track of the Prince of Asturias Pavilion - the second in Spain with these characteristics - has been made exclusively with glass from recycling, with a resin finish and dimensions of 28 m long and 15 m wide.

"We make this facility available to Murcia athletes, which, in addition to a sample of sustainable development, serves to promote sports and healthy living," said José Ballesta.

"The protection of the environment and sustainability are a vector of development of the City of Murcia, as endorsed by the Social Council of the City," said José Ballesta, who added that "Murcia must know that their effort and commitment to Recycling is worth it and is productive.

We have managed to make recycling a daily gesture ”.

In the field of recycling, Murcia is also a pioneer city through the development of the European research project 'Value Waste', an initiative that marks a milestone in the selective collection with the implementation of the brown container and that after reaching the neighborhood of La Fleet as a pilot project, will be extended to the municipality as a whole.

More than one million people reached

Murcia is one of the 12 municipalities of the Region that have participated in this initiative.

In total, five ball-shaped containers were installed that were rotating through the different municipalities, with Murcia being the one that managed to capture the most glass.

The City of Murcia stood out for the ingenious initiatives it launched to raise awareness among the largest number of people about glass recycling.

In addition, during the entire campaign that took place this fall, multiple activities were carried out that included the participation of neighbors, educational centers and associations throughout the Region, as well as green lighting in the public spaces of the city from Murcia (Moneo, Avenida Alfonso X el Sabio and Murcia Río).

The campaign, which began on October 28 of last year in Murcia, has developed an awareness through the different media, which has allowed more than one million Murcia.

Specifically, in the municipality of Murcia, lectures were offered in 16 schools, reaching more than 1,500 students.

Actions were also carried out on the street and 1,500 leaflets were distributed.

More than 6 million recycled glass and less CO2

In Murcia, more than 6 million glass were recycled in 2018 and, after this campaign, it is estimated that the year 2019 will be superior.

"The recycling of glass helps in the fight against climate change, since it avoids the extraction of raw materials from nature and reduces the emission of CO2 in the manufacturing process," said the mayor.

Adding the glass of the green container, the containers of the yellow and the cardboard and the paper of the blue, in total the Murcia have recycled 10% more than a year ago, with 20,500 tons deposited in the selective collection containers in 2018.
