Thousands of people tour ´San Esteban, the site under the light´ (09/02/2020)

The City Hall inaugurated last night the fixed lighting of the most important urban archeological network in Europe of a medieval Arab city with a night audiovisual montage.

Councilwoman Rebeca Pérez invites Murcia to discover the history of Arrabal de la Arrixaca by registering for guided tours that will begin next Wednesday, at 7:00 p.m.

José Guillén: "It is an opportunity to know the characteristics of the life of our ancestors of the twelfth century and understand many of the archaeological remains found in the different areas of this city.

Thousands of people toured yesterday 'San Esteban, the site under the light', a montage of light and sound that showed visitors the history of the Arrabal de la Arrixaca and in a unique and different way.

At night and in five countries, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Murcians had the opportunity to discover from the perimeter of the surroundings the origins of the most important urban archeological framework in Europe of a medieval Arab city.

The recreation was carried out by means of a locution in which the history of San Esteban was narrated at the same time as each of the rooms of the archaeological site were illuminated with lights of different colors.

Thousands of Murcia and visitors learned about the work that has been carried out since 2018, in places such as the 'Enclosure 1', the cemetery, the 'oratory' and, most recently, the 'Enclosure 2'.

"This tour is an opportunity to know in a different way the characteristics of the life of our ancestors of the twelfth century and understand many of the archaeological remains found in the different areas of our city," explains the Councilor for Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, José Guillén.

Day and night tours

The City Council inaugurated yesterday the fixed lighting of the archaeological environment through the audiovisual assembly 'San Esteban, the site under the light' which will allow to know the enclave both day and night.

In this way, the remains can be seen through a system that will reproduce the streets as they were originally inside the suburb and illuminate the areas with different colors.

Also, the Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, responsible for the guided tours, invited Murcia to know the surroundings by registering for the night tours that will begin next Wednesday, February 12, in the afternoon, at 7:00 p.m. hours.

This activity will take place every Wednesday until March 31 with a tour of one hour and with a maximum capacity of 50 people.

To participate it is necessary to make a prior reservation on the website www.estrategiamurcia.es/proyectos-estrategicos/san-esteban/visitar-el-yacimiento, indicating the day on which you want to make the visit, contact details and people They will visit.

"From this starting gun, citizens can discover the history of Arrabal de la Arrixaca with night visits every Wednesday, at the same time, until March 31 at the hands of archaeologists," says the mayor .

Following the instructions of the archaeologists, the accesses and the streets have been illuminated with LED lights, ultra low consumption, with which a flush lighting will be generated, sufficient to facilitate nighttime circulation and to signal the routes, as well as make visible the perimeter of the deposit.

The councilor explains that "the system has been built on site to achieve a perfect adaptation, is perched on the ground, without any support to the ground and is partially hidden."

In the words of José Guillén, "it does not generate light pollution and allows observation from its perimeter at night, whose route will be distinguished with lights of different colors."

The City Council works in San Esteban, through the Department of Culture and Heritage Recovery, that of Sustainable Mobility and Youth and Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, in coordination with municipal archaeologists and the team of researchers from the University of Murcia , directed by Jorge Eiroa.
