Murcia will be a pilot city in the implementation of a public charging point system for electric bicycles (09/02/2020)

Murcia, together with Barcelona, Florence, Berlin, Rome, Budapest and Turku, has been selected by the European Commission as a pilot city at European level for the implementation of an innovative public user-centered electric bicycle system.

This is the USERCHI H2020 Project, framed in the call 'Intelligent, sustainable and integrated transport' and in the line 'Urban mobility and sustainable electrification in large urban areas', in which the City Council is working through the European Programs service, dependent on the Department of Urban Agenda and Open Government, which Mercedes Bernab directs.

During these days the launch of this program has taken place in Brussels, where the session has been present together with the other participating partners.

In the case of Murcia, this system will include the installation of charging points using the electricity supplied by a photovoltaic pergola for 35 electric bikes.

In addition, batteries for energy storage and intelligent control will be available to balance the system using conventional power supply as well.

“This action represents a breakthrough within the new metropolitan transport and sustainable mobility model launched by the City Council and framed in the Murcia 2030 Strategy,” highlights Mercedes Bernab.

The project has a total budget of 351,813 euros for the municipality, funded entirely by the European Union.

The expected execution period is four years.

As for the expected results, it is expected to reduce 500,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere in each of the pilot cities, increase the number of electric vehicles and charging points, in addition to raising awareness and user satisfaction in sustainable mobility.

The project has 24 partners throughout Europe, of which, in Spain, in addition to Murcia, the Etra Research and Development group, the Biomechanics Institute of Valencia, the metropolitan area of Barcelona, the Spanish Association for Standardization and the company Circontrol SA
