MATHS Champions: learning math from childhood in a fun way (07/02/2020)

The initiative gathers the recommendations of PISA-OECD on the teaching of mathematics in school, improving through the game the confidence and motivation of students in solving mathematical problems.

Mathematics is fun!

This is the motto of the fourth edition of the contest organized by the bilingual school Monteagudo-Nelva, in which 5-year-old boys and girls have fun and enjoy math through play.

The MATHS Champions, the first initiative of this kind in Murcia, has taken place at the Monteagudo-Nelva headquarters, with the participation of more than 130 children from Infantil, coming from San Buenaventura schools (PP. Capuchinos), Jesús María Senda and Monteagudo-Nelva.

The participants in the MATHS Champions made various mathematical games adapted to their age by teams, and after a meal at the school the awards ceremony was held with families and teachers.

The jury has been formed by Luis José Alías Linares and Eloísa Martínez Viviente, coordinators of the EBAU of Mathematics and Chemistry, respectively;

and Rosa Vázquez Sanz and Guillermo Rodríguez Cid, directors of the Monteagudo-Nelva school.

This initiative gathers the recommendations of PISA-OECD on the teaching of Mathematics in school, familiarizing children in a fun and fun way with mathematical concepts since childhood.

In this sense, PISA (InFocus, No. 56) emphasizes on the development of mathematical competences that "there is a strong correlation between the degree of confidence that students have in their ability to solve specific math problems" in subsequent courses "and the fact of having been exposed or not to others similar in class ".

The OECD also emphasizes (InFocus, n ° 61) that, in addition to memorization, "students need to learn mathematics in a more reflective and creative way, which involves exploring alternative ways of finding solutions and adopting different perspectives."

The MATHS Champions is part of the Monteagudo-Nelva Funny Mathematics project, whose objective is that boys and girls, playing with elements that are part of their daily lives, enjoy Mathematics since childhood.
