The Faculty of Labor Sciences analyzes the labor market in the Region of Murcia and the indicators that measure decent work (06/02/2020)

The situation of workers in the Region of Murcia presents even greater traits of vulnerability than in the whole of the country, despite the improvement in labor indicators registered in recent years (decrease in the number of registered unemployed and increase in the number of affiliated to the General Treasury of the Social Security).

This follows from the different dimensions analyzed in the document 'Labor figures for the Region of Murcia 2020.01', which was presented this Thursday afternoon at the Faculty of Labor Sciences of the University of Murcia.

This publication, which from now on will be prepared on a monthly basis by the teaching and research staff of said center, intends to collect the main aspects of the regional and local labor market to serve as a diagnostic tool that easily approaches the society the situation in this area.

To this end, it draws fundamentally from two great sources of information: on the one hand, the statistics of registered unemployment and hiring prepared by the Public State Employment Service;

on the other hand, of the statistics of affiliation of workers to the General Treasury of Social Security.

With them, and making use of visual elements such as graphs, tables and maps, it presents the most significant data by exploiting and crossing variables that go beyond the mere publication of aggregate values.

In this sense, the maps that make it possible to know the distribution and evolution of unemployment at the municipal level or the analysis of local employment markets stand out, a geographical delimitation of the Region of Murcia in five large areas through its own elaboration methodology that takes into account the intermunicipal flows of workers.

Also noteworthy is the special content available to this first volume, a summary of the indicators for monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals published by the National Statistics Institute, which have been calculated at the regional level.

In this sense, the analysis prepared by the Faculty of Labor Sciences indicates that there are many aspects of improvement still in the labor market of the Region.

High unemployment rate, especially in the case of women and young people

Despite having reduced the gap between the Region of Murcia and Spain in recent years, the unemployment rate existing at the regional level is still above the national level, being especially high in the case of women (18.22% in 2019 , compared to 11.88% of men) and young people under 25 years old (33.37% compared to 14.68% of the general population).

Average income per hour noticeably low

With regard to the average hourly income of workers, the Region of Murcia again has worse values than the national average.

In 2017 (latest available data) working men in the Region of Murcia received on average € 14.51 per hour, 10% less than the national value;

meanwhile, the average salary of women at the regional level was € 12.50, compared to € 13.93 received in the country as a whole.

Great weight of temporality and involuntary bias

Finally, it is worth highlighting the great weight of temporary occupation and involuntary part-time occupation.

Employees with a temporary contract represent in 2019 in the Region of Murcia 32.9% of the total, worth six points above the national estimate.

Regarding the involuntary part-time, this situation occurs in 55.5% of part-time workers, the national value in this case being very close, with 54%.
