The arrival of the AVE would have increased the number of tourists to Murcia up to 33% (06/02/2020)

In the capital of the Region the arrival of national and foreign tourists continues to increase.

Specifically, visitors from other nationalities have increased in the last year by about 10%, from 89,979 in 2018 to a total of 98,153 in 2019. If the AVE had arrived in Murcia in 2019, the city would have received 32,400 more foreign tourists, overcoming the barrier of 100,000 foreign visitors.

Murcia is the city that has received more foreign tourists throughout 2019 compared to other cities in its surroundings, registering a total of 98,153 travelers from abroad in 2019, compared to a total of 89,979 received in 2018, which represents a increase close to 10%.

If the AVE had arrived in Murcia in 2019, the city would have received 32,400 more foreign tourists, which would mean an increase of 33%, surpassing the barrier of 100,000 foreign visitors and reaching 130,553 tourists.

According to the Report prepared by the Ministry of Development and Infrastructure of the Region of Murcia, in collaboration with the Tourism Institute of the Region of Murcia and the University of Murcia, estimates made on the effect of the arrival of the AVE to Murcia in the number of train users suggest that Murcia would have received a figure slightly higher than 180,000 travelers a year, between Spanish and foreign travelers.

Most of these new train users would be of Spanish nationality, with 19% of new train tourists corresponding to people of foreign nationality - 32,400 more foreign travelers.

Murcia, leader compared to surrounding cities

In total, the number of Spanish and foreign travelers registered in 2019 in the municipality of Murcia has reached 482,196 travelers, representing an increase of 3.4% over the same period of the previous year.

In 2018, 466,356 travelers were registered.

In this context, Murcia has obtained a higher percentage growth of foreign tourists compared to neighboring cities such as Alicante (5.8%) or Valencia (6.3%).

Regarding the number of overnight stays registered, Murcia led the growth of the surrounding cities, with an increase of 10.3% in 2019 compared to 2018, compared to cities such as Alicante (2.6%) or Valencia (5%) .

From 2015 to 2019

In the municipality of Murcia, the number of travelers in four years has increased by 35%, from 356,854 in 2015 to 482,196 registered travelers in 2019. On the other hand, overnight stays have increased by 36.27%, reaching the figure history of 784,656 in 2019.

Workers in the tourism sector in the municipality of Murcia have also increased from 2015 to 2019, from 537 workers in accommodation services to 676, which represents an increase of 26.06%.
