The City Council starts the connection of four emblematic gardens of Murcia to create a green axis of 70,000 m2 (06/02/2020)

The project will allow this spring to open a pedestrian connection between the Salitre garden, the Silk, the Rocío and the historic Huerto López-Ferrer.

"The pedestrian conquers new spaces in Murcia, giving priority to healthy itineraries and traveling on foot or by bicycle," said José Ballesta.

In the last year, the City Council has put into service 225,000 m2 of healthy and pedestrian spaces.

This new green pedestrian axis, the largest in the city, joins the pedestrianization of Alfonso X El Sabio Avenue and its monumental axis (50,000 m2), Murcia Río (65,000 m2) and the Vía Verde (40,000 m2).

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, José Guillén, visited today the works of the lung connection project that covers 70,000 m2 in the west of the city, which is creating a unified green axis between the garden of Salitre, Silk, Rocío and the historic Huerto López-Ferrer.

The action involves the creation of a pedestrian route that unifies the four parks, a new path with tricolor paving stone pavement that improves accessibility, promotes travel on foot or by bicycle and promotes a healthier lifestyle.

"The pedestrian conquers new spaces in the city, giving priority to healthy itineraries and traveling on foot and by bicycle, improving the quality of life of Murcia families and betting on sustainability," said José Ballesta, who added that " One of the development vectors of the municipality of Murcia, endorsed by the Social Council last week, is the environment and sustainable mobility, a growth model that we are developing through a concrete battery of actions such as the commitment to the bicycle , the Clean Air Strategy or the pedestrianization of public spaces â€.

The works, which involve an investment of more than 900,000 euros, will end completely at the end of March in the three gardens: La Seda (30,000m2), Parque del Rocío (5,120m2), and Salitre (27,000m2), which connects with the López-Ferrer Garden (2,900m2), of hispanomusulman origin and the only representative of the lower medieval gardens.

It is a performance with high social profitability, since more than 40,700 people reside in the area of influence of this environment.

The pedestrian, protagonist of urban spaces

This new green pedestrian axis, the largest in the area of the city, joins the itinerary opened a few months ago by the City of Murcia, after the completion of the works of Alfonso X El Sabio Avenue, a monumental axis that connects the river and La Glorieta, with Plaza Belluga, Trapería and Santo Domingo until La Circular;

covering an area of 50,000 m2 (equivalent to 5 soccer fields).

On the other hand, the set of actions of Murcia Río I already concluded add more than 65,000 m2 of new green public spaces to the municipality.

Another pedestrian and cyclist space that has been put into operation is the Via Verde de la Cordillera Sur, with 8.5 km and 40,000 m2.

"These three major actions, along with the new west axis that we present today, represent a total of 225,000 m2 of exclusive spaces for pedestrians, favoring healthy mobility in our municipality and realizing real alternatives to the motor vehicle," said José Ballesta.

This commitment to sustainability also materializes in the new network of cycle paths;

where Murcia has 123 kilometers of cycle paths.

Silk Garden

The Silk garden will have a gazebo overlooking the lake and will be an 'intelligent' garden, since through mobile technology species can be identified and information on the different natural areas can be obtained.

A pedestrian visual connection between the Silk Park and the Rocío Garden will be established with a tricolor paving stone pavement on San Antón Street.

Road traffic will not be cut, but vehicle speed will be reduced and foot traffic will be favored.

On the other hand, a contemplative living area will be created next to the kiosk, by incorporating wooden sun loungers and a picnic area under the existing pine forest.

Also, new wooden games of high resistance and durability will be installed, integrated with nature and for the promotion of children's creativity.

These are climbing, water and sand games, forming a new area with different pavement textures: sand, gravel, artificial grass and games painted on the ground, to improve the children's gaming experience.

All this under the natural shade of the woodland.

There will be a renovation of all the park benches with the Alpine wooden model and shade will be incorporated in the central area of the auditorium esplanade.

Dew Garden

In the Garden of El Rocío a focus of urban activation will be created, with new tree and shrub plantations, pedestrian access from the Silk Garden, an outdoor gymnasium, a special playground for children called playground ' Swordfish ', a topographic children's game and a relaxation area.

There will be a renovation of pavements, grass, irrigation systems and the pool.

The image of the transformation center will also be improved.

Salitre Garden

The project will involve the creation of a new botanical garden on the island, creation of new shaded spaces, sand and water playground, a grandstand-viewpoint to the botanical garden, irrigation renovation, substrate supply, interactive and sensory games, more trees , new shaded and cobbled residential areas of Rocío-Salitre street.

In the three gardens, actions for the promotion of biodiversity will be carried out with new tree and shrub plantations within the Forest Plan, installation of accommodation for birds (nest boxes, feeders and drinking fountains), as well as hotels for insects.
