The City Council celebrates the declaration of the Old Bridge as a Site of Cultural Interest (06/02/2020)

The Councilor for Culture and Heritage Recovery, Jesús Pacheco, has celebrated "the declaration of the Old Bridge, also known as the Danger Bridge, as a Property of Cultural Interest."

"This means recognizing the valuable heritage and history of the municipality, highlighting the great relevance and interest of this construction and will allow us to continue working on the protection and recovery of our heritage," said Pacheco.

This infrastructure, whose first stone was laid on September 10, 1718, was built almost three centuries ago, replacing the previous bridge destroyed in 1701 as a result of one of the many floods that ravaged Murcia over the years.

The solution presented by the architect Toribio Martínez de la Vega was to build a structure with a notorious elevation that is still visible today, since the slopes are clearly visible at the end of the Gran Vía and towards the Camachos square.

The works were auctioned in 1704, but they did not begin to be executed until 1717. The construction of the bridge does not conclude, after several long interruptions and some modifications, until 1742, with the intervention of Jaime Bort (1739-1742), baroque architect whose work more important was the facade of the Cathedral, the Plaza del Marqués de Camacho, the altarpiece of the Church of La Merced or its intervention on the facade of the Sanctuary of Fuensanta, styling the central niche with the image of the Virgin flanked by St. Patrick and San Fulgencio

The popular denomination of bridge of the Dangers is due to the presence next to a niche that keeps the image of a virgin named of the Dangers, placed on September 12, 1742, of deep veneration in the city.

The Old Bridge was the first bridge in the history of Murcia that endured without problems the periodic floods of the Segura River, including the great flood of Santa Teresa of 1879.
