The University of Murcia participates in a European project to create a network of inclusive universities (04/02/2020)

The University of Murcia is one of the seven European universities that, coordinated by the ONCE Foundation, participate in an Erasmus + project that aims to create the European Network of Inclusive Universities within three years.

The University of Murcia is a reference center in inclusion and is the Spanish university with the highest ratio of students with disabilities in their classrooms.

The first phase of the Erasmus + project focuses on establishing those standards that universities must meet to have inclusive and quality environments and, subsequently, cooperation methods will be established.

For the design of this network, the members of the working group have already begun to analyze at least 56 universities throughout the European Union that stand out for their good inclusion practices with recognized standards.

"The idea is to create a seal that recognizes the most inclusive universities and that people with disabilities; whether they are students, faculty or administration staff, they can know which university environments offer adapted infrastructure and better environments for inclusion," explains Ana Millán , coordinator of the Diversity Attention Service of the University of Murcia.

At the first working meeting, held in Madrid, the participating institutions also agreed to set up a web platform so that the university community can check the level of inclusion of universities and where they can share good practices.

Thanks to this project, the most inclusive universities will be identified, incentivized to the rest to advance along this path and offer a tool to promote mobility for European university students with disabilities.

In this way it is intended to make them lose their fear of going outside and studying or working in other European universities.

Isabel Martínez Lozano, Director of Programs with Universities and Talent Promotion of Fundación ONCE, explains that "guaranteeing the inclusion of people with disabilities in higher education cannot only be the will of some universities but of all of them. That is why we want to build a system of basic standards for all European universities to comply with. "

Together with the University of Murcia, the ONCE Foundation (coordinator), the European Disability Forum (EDF), the Eastern University of Finland, the University of Porto (Portugal), the University of the Trieste Study (Italy) participate in this project , the Polytechnic University of Lublin (Poland) and the Spanish universities of Seville and Autonomous University of Madrid.

This is the second European project dedicated to improving the mobility of students with disabilities in which the University of Murcia participates.

The first was Mobiability, coordinated by the UMU, which consisted in the elaboration of a standard of support measures for Erasmus + students with special needs that universities had to include in order to provide adequate service to students with disabilities.

The conclusions of this first project serve as a reference for the work that will allow the creation of the network of inclusive universities that will benefit both students and university staff.
