The City Council begins the reform of the more than 16,000 m2 of the Fofó garden (03/02/2020)

The works will be a remarkable visual improvement for Murcia who every day cross this central green area, which will have new grass areas, shaded spaces and areas of stay by the lake.

The pond will feature a new and modern railing with LED lighting.

More than 5,000 m2 of pavement will be renovated.

The total investment amounts to about 310,000 euros.

Murcia can enjoy, from March, a renovated garden of Fofó, one of the largest in the municipality with about 16,000 m2.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, visited this central green environment today with the Councilor for Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, José Guillén, and said that “we will provide this space, meeting point and family leisure, with an innovative design and new areas of stay and recreation by the lake â€.

The works, which are part of the 2023 Pool Plan and in which different teams composed of a dozen people participate, will be a significant visual improvement for Murcia who pass through the area every day, as well as an improvement in accessibility, with new areas of grass and shade spaces.

With respect to the lake - the largest in the municipality with a volume of 1,600 cubic meters and an area of 3,200 square meters - the old perimeter fence will be removed and a modern railing with LED lighting installed.

Likewise, conditioning works will be carried out in it, such as painting, sanding, caulking, damage repair, graffiti removal, as well as thorough cleaning.

The works being carried out by the STV-Actua joint venture will not entail, at any time, discomfort for the ducks that inhabit the lake since they will be executed by sectors, respecting the local fauna.

The action, which involves an investment close to 310,000 euros, includes the renovation of more than 5,000 m2 of pavement, eliminating existing slopes and guaranteeing accessibility to the different areas of the park.

The area of influence of the park, located in the neighborhood of Santa María de Gracia, comprises a population of 12,500 people, of which around 5,000 are young and children, so it is a project with high social profitability.

More shade and development of the local ecosystem

In the proceedings it is also planned to repair the pavement that is currently damaged by the transit of people and the passing of the years.

In the same way, the ecosystem of the place, both of the lake and of the flower beds, will be valued, thus being able to favor the development of the native fauna.

Work is also being done on the creation of new grass areas that allow increasing a green frame of peace in which to disconnect from daily life with modern furniture and design of red color and with contemporary shapes.

Thinking about the neighbors in the area who walk every day next to this green space, the density of vegetation will increase;

achieving an increase in the shadow places of the garden with new pergolas, and with the incorporation of vegetation to the existing ones, which will allow a reduction of heat in the hottest months in the municipality.

Pool Plan

The 2023 Pool Plan encompasses four major measures, including the renovation of nine major works, such as the four ponds, such as La Seda, El Salitre, Los Patos, in San Ginés and Fofó Park, and the five sources historical sites, such as the Circular Square, the Clock Tower House (Tocinos Bridge), the José Cánovas Ortiz Garden (Beniaján), Juana Jugán Avenue (Tocinos Bridge) and Liberty Avenue (Guadalupe).

The construction of ten new ornamental fountains in the most emblematic places of the city, such as Santo Domingo and San Esteban;

the holding of an annual contest of ideas, in which the winning project will be executed;

and the investment of 100,000 euros per year for the construction of new sources in the municipality and its districts, for five years, are the other three major measures that make up the 2023 Pool Plan.

"Water is very present in the history of our city, it is an indispensable element in the Mediterranean gardens from its origins and we are going to give it a central place in these spaces," said the mayor.
