The Department of the Elderly is studying expanding the number of reading clubs to other social centers of the municipality (29/01/2020)

The Department of Elderly, Disability and Development Cooperation led by the mayor Paqui Pérez is studying the expansion of reading clubs to a greater number of Social Centers for the Municipality in the face of increased demand for this activity by members .

In this way, the responsible councilor is visiting the reading clubs of various Senior Centers, accompanied by members of the Cultural Association of Teachers of Murcia (ACDOMUR) that coordinates 10 of the 16 reading clubs currently in existence.

These clubs have been operating in the municipality of Murcia since 1998, through a collaboration agreement signed between the City of Murcia and the CARM, in which volunteer organizations such as ACDOMUR and the Friends of Reading Foundation also participate. The latter organizes the reading clubs of La Alberca and Puente Tocinos.

Currently, the 16 reading clubs meet one day a week and bring together more than two hundred participants, plus volunteers who coordinate and energize this activity that takes place in the Senior Centers of La Flota, Vistalegre , San Antón, San Andrés, San Antolin, Tocinos Bridge, Los Garres, La Cueva (Monteagudo), Cabezo de Torres, San Miguel, Santiago and Zaraíche, La Paz, La Alberca, Rincón de Beniscornia, Santa Eulalia, San Juan, El Palmar and Casillas, where about 200 people participate, plus volunteers who coordinate and energize this activity.

"From the Department of the Elderly we want to study the possibility of expanding its number and extending it to the rest of the centers of the municipality that demand this activity," said the mayor Paqui Pérez.

To do this, the councilor for the elderly has explained that "it is necessary to expand the collaboration agreement, increase the coverage of operating expenses, between cultural trips, museum tickets, books, documentation, transportation of volunteers and check their availability to reinforce and ensure the continuity of this initiative ".

In addition to reading literary works, this activity is complemented by scheduled visits, audiovisual projections, home loans or reading for people with reduced mobility and other initiatives related to reading.

Encourage and promote the habit of reading among the elderly, expand the offer, enable the creation of meeting groups and influence the social and individual improvement of the elderly are some of the objectives pursued by the reading clubs of the Social centers for the elderly.
