Murcia, the first city to implement the ´Oasis´ project, which improves air quality in urban environments (29/01/2020)

The initiative is being carried out in the Garden of Santa Isabel and involves the implementation of pavement made from crushed rubber tire impregnated in a photocatalytic agent (Id-Sun), an innovative material that reduces gas pollution the vehicles

This innovative pavement, manufactured thanks to the recycling of 1,250 tires, is being installed on an area of 285 square meters.

Its installation allows converting solar energy into chemical energy, reducing nitrous oxide and improving air quality.

This action is part of the Murcia SmartCity strategic project and is aligned with the Municipal Clean Air strategy.

The mayor of Murcia, Jos Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, Jos Guilln, visited this morning the garden of Santa Isabel, where municipal technicians are implementing the research project 'Oasis', which involves the application of a new pavement, the crushing of rubber impregnated in a photocatalytic agent (Id-Sun), whose characteristics allow to reduce the contamination derived from gases such as nitrous oxide, coming from the combustion of motor vehicles, among other factors.

"Reducing the concentration of this type of gases, of those most responsible for pollution, is a primary objective for the City Council," said the mayor of Murcia, who added that "Murcia is the first city in the world to bet on this type of measures, making urban environments places of decontamination through projects such as the one we are presenting today, thus improving air quality and contributing to the circular economy ”.

“Due to our atmospheric characteristics and hours of sunshine, as it is the seventh city in Spain in number of inhabitants and a city highly committed to the environment and sustainable development in urban environments, Murcia is the perfect place for the implementation of this project ”, Added Jos Ballesta.

This innovative pavement, manufactured from the recycling of 1,250 tires, is being installed on an area of 285 square meters.

'Oasis' is a research project that is being implemented in Murcia by the companies of Murcia RNC and Synthelast, in collaboration with the City of Murcia.

Murcia Smart City, a commitment to urban quality

The implementation of this project, 'Oasis', which involves the application of the latest technological innovations at the service of Murcia, improving the quality of life of families, especially children, who enjoy hours of games in this park, It is part of the Murcia Smart City municipal strategy, launched by the City Council.

Specifically, the Murcia Smart City municipal strategy is developed through the MiMurcia project, the smart city model that seeks to put the latest technological innovations at the service of people, as well as improve living conditions in our municipality and the quality of the environment .

In this context, 'Oasis' is an R + D + i project (research, development and innovation), developed by the Murcian company RNC, which improves the air quality of the municipality by applying the latest technological advances.

A benchmark in circular economy

This type of rubber contributes to the creation of safe environments for the little ones, since it involves the application of continuous soils and is also a benchmark in circular economy.

In this sense, this action is also aligned with the Municipal Circular Economy strategy, since 'Oasis' is carried out through the recycling process, using tires collected in a hundred containers enabled by the Murcian company RNC, distributed by workshops of the municipality of Murcia.

Once collected, the tires are processed, returning them to society in the form of crushed rubber tires.

Clean Air

This pioneering action, which will soon be extended to other parks and gardens of the municipality, is aligned with the Municipal Clean Air strategy, which is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving air quality or optimizing the process of collection, treatment and recycling of materials, creating a more sustainable city and moving towards the circular economy.

Likewise, the implementation of this new pavement is being carried out in compliance with the goals of the 2030 Agenda, specifically with objectives 11 - Sustainable cities and communities - and 13 - Climate action.

From crushed tire rubber

The rubber used in the 'Oasis' project is manufactured from crushing rubber tires, and is applied on the surface with a catalytic photo agent, converting solar energy into chemical energy, reducing nitrous oxide gases from the combustion of motor vehicles and heating boilers, among other factors.

These gases are one of the biggest responsible for pollution and can cause various adverse health effects.

In this context, the new pavement transforms nitrous oxide gases into non-harmful substances, creating pollution-free environments.

Specifically, this process is possible thanks to the application of continuous rubber pavements with a catalytic photo agent, since it is carried out through photocatalysis, a photochemical reaction that converts solar energy into chemical energy.

The phases of 'Oasis'

The confluence with large avenues in its immediate surroundings, as well as being a very busy area for pedestrians and having among its urban equipment a children's playground are the main reasons why this initiative, which began in December and will conclude in February, is It has been held in the Plaza Santa Isabel.

- Phase 1. Measurement of the environmental levels of the area through the use of passive dosimeters of nitrous oxide gases, whose generic term is NOx, for sampling for one week, repeating this process for three weeks.

Two monitors have also been placed to collect data.

This first phase was carried out between December 10, 2019 until January 22, 2020.

-Phase 2. Replacing the pavement of the garden, covering it with continuous soil with catalytic photographic material - with which it is possible to convert solar energy into chemical energy, reducing polluting gases - in one of the areas of the park.

This second phase, launched on January 23, will run until February 4.

-Phases 3 and 4. Realization of the same measurement protocol of the first phase, but already with the crushed rubber tire implanted.

This third phase will take place for approximately three weeks.

Subsequently, phase 4 will be carried out, which involves the repetition of the previous phase, evaluating the evolution of pavement effectiveness.
