José Ballesta: "Today we celebrate the 72nd Anniversary of the first paratrooper launch in Spain, which took place on our land, in Murcia, and took place on January 23, 1948."

The date coincides with the historical milestone of jumps made by the Méndez Parada Military School of Parachuting since its creation, in 1947, which reaches 1,500,000 launches.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with members of the Municipal Corporation, attended this morning the 72nd Anniversary of the first paratrooper launch in Spain at the Alcantarilla Air Base, where this military act was held.

“Today we celebrate the 72nd Anniversary of the first paratrooper jump in Spain, made on January 23, 1948, a historic date that took place on our land, in Murcia, and that coincides with the historical milestone of jumps made by the Military School of Parachuting Méndez Parada, which reaches a million and a half million jumps since its creation, in 1947, ”said José Ballesta.

During the event, which was chaired by the chief of the General Staff of the Air Force, Javier Salto Martínez-Avial, and attended by the defense delegate in Murcia, José Ignacio Martí Scharfhausen, the chief colonel of the Air Base of Alcantarilla and director of the Méndez Parada Military School of Parachuting, Francisco Javier Fernández, as well as advisors of the Regional Assembly, a parachutist exhibition and delivery of the commemorative plaque to the Distinguished Paratrooper, the junior officer José Miguel Fernández Abellán.

The oldest active paratrooper division general of the Air Force, José Luis Figuero Aguilar, has also intervened and a tribute has been made to the deceased who have served during his career at the Military School of Parachuting.
