Essential pillar of Murcia Smart Ciy

The consolidation of electric mobility is one of the essential pillars of the new energy model and, in particular, of the Murcia Smart City strategy.

In this context, the City Council and Iberdrola will work hand in hand to promote the use of the electric vehicle, overcoming the current barriers to the option of such mobility, such as the absence of fast recharging infrastructures in spaces owned and publicly accessible.

Both entities share common objectives, related to the change of the mobility model in cities, based on the electrification of transport, with the aim of achieving greater energy efficiency, as well as to reduce emissions associated with transport and improve air quality in the cities.

The signing of this Agreement is a consequence of all this and is framed within the strategic Murcia Smart City project, and aligned with the Municipal Clean Air strategy and the Local Electric Vehicle Strategy, which encourages the use of renewable energies and the sustainable development of mobility, as well as new transport systems in the city and new mobility models, applying the latest technological innovations to improve the quality of life and services provided to Murcia.

Specifically, this Agreement has been promoted by the Murcia Smart City Office, in collaboration with the Local Energy Agency.

The Electric Vehicle Strategy of Murcia, national prize for Sustainable Mobility

The Local Electric Vehicle Strategy is the most important milestone in terms of support policies for the electric vehicle carried out so far in the City Council, which includes a total of 50 measures that seek to reduce pollutant emissions in Murcia and which was recognized in 2019 with the 'Renault Award for best practice in Sustainable and Accessible Mobility', in the category of Public Administration.

Murcia, at the forefront in the management of electric charging points in Spain

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the director of Iberdrola Distribution in the Valencian Community and Region of Murcia, Bonifacio Álvarez, signed in 2019 the Collaboration Agreement for the development and implementation of the Smart City project in 2019, turning the Murcia Consistory into the First City Council of Spain to sign this agreement.

The firm allowed to incorporate into the intelligent platform of the City of Murcia, 'MiMurcia', the so-called 'neuronal trace', that is, the plan of the electricity distribution network of the municipality, having accurate information on the location, capacity and consumption of the network throughout the municipality, being able to also provide the necessary reinforcements to deal with the actions required by the implementation of the Smart City model.

Among the applications that favors the deployment of the smart grid, it is worth highlighting the detection of the best charging points for electric and clean vehicles in the municipality of Murcia, the improvement of the quality of supply and the attention to the citizen, the development of new functionalities of the electricity distribution network, reducing the energy costs of the city, as well as obtaining data related to consumption, integration of renewables and penetration of electric mobility that help optimal management.
