The participatory process of the municipality's first mobility ordinance begins (22/01/2020)

The Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, has held this morning the first meeting of the participatory process of the first mobility ordinance of the municipality.

What is intended with this new regulation is to harmonize the different uses of urban roads and spaces from a shared vision of mobility, taking into account pedestrian use, vehicle traffic, parking, transportation of people, distribution of goods, and different uses related to mobility, and increase road safety, protect people's health, bet on environmental sustainability, order road uses and include new modes of transport.

The new ordinance will take into account the scale of priorities it affects, always dealing first with the pedestrian, and then personal mobility, collective transportation and private vehicle, in this order.

In this meeting, which was attended by representatives of the different political groups with representation in the City Council, the first 56 articles of the draft of this new regulation were analyzed.

Thus, different aspects have been analyzed such as coexistence in public roads and spaces, access restrictions and speed limitations for environmental reasons, the priority of pedestrians, bicycle and public transport, the type of public roads, mobility by bicycle, scooters and personal mobility vehicles or transport cycles of people or goods, among others.

One of the main reflections of the meeting has been the need to regulate the use of scooters since this means of transport is increasingly used by Murcia, on issues such as the age limit or the routes through which it can circulate.

It has also analyzed the provision of a public scooter rental service, either by public tender or managed directly by the City Council.

Another of the main issues on which the representatives of the different political groups have worked is the importance of promoting sustainable mobility in the 'last kilometer' through the delivery companies, due to the exponential growth that is experiencing during the last years for electronic commerce.

What is intended is to establish a cycling and allow the circulation of bicycles with a storage space of up to 100 kilos so that distributors can make their deliveries by bicycle in the last section, thus reducing emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere and improving the Traffic on the streets.

Likewise, the intention of the City Council to progressively enable specific parking spaces for bicycles and scooters has been reported, in order to avoid parking on sidewalks or pedestrian spaces.

Councilwoman Rebeca Pérez has thanked the representatives of the different political groups "for their contributions and reflections because together we will achieve the best mobility ordinance that a municipality like Murcia can have, thus regulating the integration of all sustainable mobility systems and the circumstances of the municipality.
