The 2030 Forest Plan reaches the neighborhoods of San Pedro, San Antolín and San Nicolás with the first lemon plantations (16/01/2020)

José Ballesta: "These new specimens, which are a symbol of Murcia and our most emblematic tree, provide new shade spaces, improve air quality and replace existing sidewalk pivots with trees."

The City Council will double the number of trees in the municipality of Murcia this decade through the 2030 Forest Plan, reaching 200,000 copies.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Urban Development, José Guillén, attended this morning the tree planting of the 2030 Forest Plan that is being carried out in different streets and squares of the neighborhoods of San Pedro, San Antolín and San Nicolás, the first action of this municipal strategy that is carried out in the neighborhoods of the urban center of Murcia and that will involve the planting of about thirty new specimens.

“This is the first plantation of the 2030 Forest Plan that is being carried out with lemon trees,†said José Ballesta, who added that “these new specimens, which are a Murcian symbol and our most emblematic tree, not only provide new spaces and improve the quality of life of the neighbors, but also replace the existing pivots on sidewalks, as in the Plaza San Julián, where the pivots are being replaced by trees.

In this way, in addition, the intrusion of vehicles in areas that are exclusively pedestrian will be avoided â€.

The 2030 Forestry Plan is "the municipal strategy that is marking the urban environmental and landscape planning, with which from the City of Murcia we are going to double the number of existing trees in the municipality, reaching 200,000 copies," said José Ballesta.

This action will involve the planting of thirty trees in the neighborhoods of San Pedro, San Antolín and San Nicolás, in the streets of San Pedro, Jara Carrillo, Plaza San Julián, Plaza Sandoval and in the Plaza José María Bautista Hernández, becoming the first action of the 2030 Foresta Plan that is carried out in the neighborhoods of the urban center of Murcia, in the center of the city.

Currently, plantations have already been carried out on San Pedro Street and are being carried out in Plaza San Julián.

During the next weeks they will run in the rest of the streets and squares mentioned.

Specifically, the action consists in opening new tree blocks in streets that did not have trees, replacing the pivots with trees, installing an irrigation system for the correct development of the specimens.

Last plantations carried out in educational centers of neighborhoods and districts of Murcia

Recently, during the months of January and December, new specimens have also been planted in four educational centers, which are the Juan Carlos I school in Llano de Brujas;

the Pintor Pedro Cano school, in El Palmar;

the Juan XXIII educational center, in El Ranero, and in the La Paz nursery, a public center that today opens its doors.

Priority to the native varieties of Murcia

The 2030 Forestry Plan gives priority to the planting of native varieties, which adapt to the climate of the municipality and its thermal individuals, as well as water scarcity.

Murcia is characterized by having a large temperature difference between day and night, up to 14 degrees.

This municipal strategy gives special preference to deciduous varieties, and has a clear commitment to tree alignment, copies at street level and in schools, which provide shade for both people and urban buildings.

The Forest Plan is framed in the Murcia 2020-2030 Strategy, whose first objective is the care of the environment and the promotion of sustainability.

Distribution of the new 100,000 trees in the municipality

Throughout this decade, until 2030, the 100,000 new copies will be distributed through eight strategic lines, which are the following:

-Public educational centers.

The 2030 Forest Plan will involve the planting of some 2,000 new specimens distributed in a hundred schools in the municipality, new shadow spaces that can be enjoyed by some 20,000 schoolchildren.

-Murcia Rio II.

It will house 50% of the new plantations, 50,000 trees that will extend along 27 km of the riverbed and 14 districts, in the new large metropolitan parks, areas of stay and meanders.

-Greenways.

Approximately 10% of the copies of the 2030 Forestry Plan will be planted on the Vía Verde during the next 10 years.

Currently, more than 1,300 copies have already been planted.

-Reforestation in rural, mountain and field spaces.

The City of Murcia, together with the Morus Alba Environmental Association, has already planted more than 1,000 new trees in Corvera, with the aim of creating a native forest.

It is a repopulation that is being carried out through endemic Mediterranean species, an action that will be extended through different spaces throughout the municipality with the collaboration of different associations and groups linked to the environment, youth, women, disability, sports , etc.

-Parks, music and action.

It is a program to encourage outdoor activities in parks and gardens of the municipality of Murcia, encouraging and encouraging healthy activities and respect for the environment.

In this sense, the 2030 Forestry Plan contributes to the realization of workshops for planting trees and shrubs throughout the more than 3,000 green areas of the municipality, through neighborhood collaboration.

- Senior Centers.

The objective is the planting of trees in the vicinity of the Social Centers of the Elderly and counting on their collaboration.

-Terra Natura.

The City Council has launched a reforestation campaign that will expand the green areas of the animal park, organizing plantations through various activities with groups and schoolchildren who go daily to the most emblematic zoo natural park in our region.

-Barrios and districts.

Thanks to the 2030 Forest Plan, the districts and neighborhoods of the municipality will have up to 15,000 new trees, which will be planted at street level.

They will also be distributed in squares, boulevards and municipal gardens.

-Corporate Social Responsibility.

This strategy line promotes the planting of trees in the municipality of Murcia, an action that is carried out between the City Council of Murcia in collaboration with the companies of the Region of Murcia that want to join the 2030 Forest Plan through sponsorship and promotion of the plantations of the New copies

-Medianas and roundabouts.

The tree mass in these green areas will be reforested and expanded and the trees will be replaced in the medium and roundabouts of the municipality that have lost it.

4 million green areas in the municipality

Murcia currently has about 4 million m2 of green areas distributed in the more than 3,000 parks and gardens of the city and districts.

In these areas, in addition to urban frameworks, there are more than 116,000 woodland specimens of 210 different species.

In total, there are 60,557 units of road trees and 55,656 in green areas that depend on the attention of municipal services.
