The City Council begins 2020 with new tree plantations to reach 200,000 in this decade (08/01/2020)

Specifically, mulberry trees of 3 and 4 meters in height and a diameter of 14 cm have been planted, expanding the area of ​​shade existing in the schoolyard, a tree closely linked to Murcia and the traditional silk cultivation.

Subsequently, the drip irrigation system will be installed to ensure the health of the specimens.

Recently, Astrapace users participated in the planting of new trees in Terra Natura, also within the Forest Plan of the City of Murcia.

The initiative includes about 550 specimens between 3 and 4 meters high, in addition to a forest plantation of 1,600 small-sized trees.

More than 210 species

Murcia currently has about 4 million m2 of green areas distributed in the more than 3,000 parks and gardens of the city and districts.

In these areas, in addition to urban frameworks, there are more than 116,000 woodland specimens of 210 different species.

In total, there are 60,557 units of road trees and 55,656 in green areas that depend on the attention of municipal services.

The Forest Plan aims to exceed 200,000 copies in 2030.

Trees adapted to the characteristics of Murcia

Based on these criteria, the new plantations prioritize native varieties, which adapt to the climate, water scarcity and thermal characteristics of the municipality (in Murcia there is a very high temperature difference between day and night, up to 14 grades), with special preference to those of deciduous leaves (improve global warming and nourish and fertilize the soil) and a clear commitment to tree alignment, specimens at street level and in schools, which provide shade for both People like urban buildings.

One million less tons of CO2

The Forest Plan is framed in the Murcia 2020-2030 Strategy, whose first objective is the care of the environment and the promotion of sustainability.

“We are going to reduce CO2 emissions to the atmosphere by one million tons in the 2030 horizon. We also want to achieve a 38% energy saving, a 330% increase in the use of renewable energy, and a decrease of 939,000 tCO2 in the municipality (44% less than in 2007) over the next decade, â€explained the councilor.

This Strategy involves all municipal services and collects a battery of actions under the name of 'Clean Air', which were launched in 2019: the free pruning service to the huertanos to avoid agricultural burns;

the gradual renewal of the bus fleet and acquisition of new vehicles powered by biofuels, hybrids or electric vehicles;

creation of deterrent parking lots;

periodic checks of gas emissions from vehicles in circulation, together with the Ecological Patrol of the Local Police (more than 1,000 vehicles per year);

pedestrianization of 252,000 m2 and 4 restricted traffic areas (267 streets);

the Greenway;

new network of bike lanes;

Electric Vehicle strategy;

sustainable lighting;

innovative ways of recycling through the implementation of the fifth container;

or the reduction of traffic pollution with the 'Claire' environmental sensors system, among other measures.
