The care of the environment, the improvement of transport, the structuring of the territory and the promotion of Murcian talent, Ballesta objectives for the 2020-2030 horizon.

The mayor said that "we closed 2019 with the materialization of numerous City Projects, such as the pedestrianization of Alfonso X, Murcia Rio or the Greenway of the South Coast; and we started 2020 with others underway, such as the Pedanías Investment Plan, the imminent start of the works in the Old Jail or the definitive recovery of the San Esteban site and its square. "

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, today offered a balance of the year 2019 and announced the objectives of the Murcia 2020-2030 Strategy, among which four fundamental pillars stand out: sustainability and environment, clean mobility, structuring of the territory and culture and talent

"We have developed a ten-year strategy that will allow us to mark the lines of action for the next decade, prioritizing those issues that most concern Murcia's society and that are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals," he said. José Ballesta.

The mayor added that “we closed 2019 with the materialization of numerous City Projects, such as the pedestrianization of Alfonso X, Murcia Río and its river promenade or the opening of the Greenway of the South Coast;

and we started 2020 with other strategic projects underway, such as the start of the Special Investment Plan in Pedanías, the imminent start of the works in the Old Jail or the drafting of the project for the definitive recovery of the San Esteban deposit and its square †.

1. Sustainability: one million less tons of CO2

The first objective of the Murcia 2020-2030 Strategy is the care of the environment and the promotion of sustainability.

To prevent and reduce the effects of climate change, the City Council has proposed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“The objective is to reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by one million tons by the 2030 horizon. This is part of the Municipal Climate Change Mitigation Strategy, the document that includes the set of measures and actions to be carried out up to the horizon 2030, with which we intend to achieve energy savings of 38%, a 330% increase in the use of renewable energy, and the decrease of 939,000 tCO2 in the municipality (44% less than in 2007) over the next decade, â€explained the alderman.

This Strategy involves all municipal services and collects a battery of actions under the name of 'Clean Air', which have already been launched in 2019: the free pruning service to the huertanos to avoid agricultural burns;

the gradual renewal of the bus fleet and acquisition of new vehicles powered by biofuels, hybrids or electric vehicles;

creation of deterrent parking lots;

periodic checks of gas emissions from vehicles in circulation, together with the Ecological Patrol of the Local Police (more than 1,000 vehicles per year);

pedestrianization of 252,000 m2 and 4 restricted traffic areas (267 streets);

the Greenway;

new network of bike lanes;

Electric Vehicle strategy;

Forest Plan 2030;

sustainable lighting;

innovative ways of recycling through the implementation of the fifth container;

or the reduction of traffic pollution with the 'Claire' environmental sensors system, among other measures.

2. Mobility: electrical means and clean transport

To improve resilience to climate change, it is essential to promote sustainable urban mobility with clean urban transport, better collective transport, urban-rural connection, optimization of the road network, cycling, pedestrian transport and electric mobility and systems development of clean energy supply.

Within the Mobility Plan, the following projects stand out:

The creation of a network of public car parks that invite you to leave the private vehicle and use public transport, doubling the number of seats from 8,000 to 16,000, acting as intermodal nodes (with tram, BRT or bus stops) and whose cost is reduced rate.

Implantation of the Tranvibus.

High Performance Bus Lines for lines with high number of travelers.

Public public transport network of public management, with electric motorcycles, electric bicycles and electric scooters.

Transport nodes: the different lines, public car parks and modes of transport will be connected to each other, at strategic points that facilitate transshipment between them.

3. Vertebration of the Territory: social cohesion

The improvement of transport will be key to achieve territorial cohesion in the municipality of Murcia, which has almost 900 km2 of extension.

"The ultimate goal of the territory's structuring is social cohesion, as well as the urban and public services balance of the different population centers of the municipality, where about half a million people reside," said the mayor, who added that "Murcia is a city that does not stop growing."

In this sense, José Ballesta stressed that “our population growth rate is one of the highest in the country at the moment.

It is true that there is a Spain that is being emptied, but there is another Spain that is being filled and must be attended;

and therefore we demand fair financing as the seventh capital of Spain â€.

In addition to the improvement of the transport service, the different projects that are being carried out from the City Council of Murcia and that are advancing along the lines of this strategic objective are the following: South Connection, Huerta Action Plan, Murcia River, Ecological Murcia , Investment Plan in Pedanías and Barrios, Fortalezas del Rey Lobo and Murcia Medieval.

4. Innovation, talent and culture

Digital innovation is key in this section.

Murcia will live in 2020 the full development of the Murcia Smart project.

“Murcia is going to become an avant-garde environment at the national level, in which the latest technologies applied to the field of urban management and the daily needs of the residents of the municipality will be developed in areas such as connectivity in public spaces, traffic management and interconnection of public transport, â€explained the mayor.

All actions will be centralized from the nerve center of the smart city, CEUS (Single Monitoring Center), which will be located in the Abenarabi building in Murcia, from where you can view the municipality as a whole.

Another of the great purposes of the project is to create synergies with local innovative companies.

Not only is it an institutional project, but it will also lead to the development of an important technological area in Murcia, thanks to the new services of the MiMurcia platform.

With respect to the cultural model, Murcia is a municipality that has unique characteristics to be a national reference.

The environment and the quality of life of the city, together with the existence of a large network of cultural infrastructures (auditoriums, theaters, museums, cultural centers ...) make Murcia the ideal place for artistic and cultural production.

To these characteristics is added the character of the people of Murcia, young, vital and full of talent, which is making in recent years our artists and creatives are carrying the Murcia brand in all corners of Spain and the world

The new cultural model for the city of Murcia will revolve in three axes: the emerging talent program #MurciaSeMueve, the promotion program of the professional cultural sector 'Murcia reborn', the program 'Murcia Viva', which will be the projection of Murcia as a city cultural.

The commitment to culture in the municipality of Murcia is evident with the opening, in this 2019, of three new emblematic spaces for art and creative production, such as pavilions 1 and 2 of the Artillery Barracks, the Artistic Laboratory of Carmen and the Stables Room.
