More than 62 percent of the UMU students are women, the highest percentage in their history (18/12/2019)

The University of Murcia presented on Wednesday the latest statistics from the Office of Unique Data

The University of Murcia has presented this Wednesday, December 18 in the boardroom of the Rector's Office, 'The University of Murcia in figures', making known the work being developed by the Office of Unique Data, with an impact on the latest statistics on teaching activity and human resources.

The act has had the presence, among others, of José Luján, rector of the UMU;

Sonia Madrid, Vice Chancellor for Studies;

José Antonio López Pina, Vice-Rector for Teachers;

José Antonio Cascales, UMU manager;

and José Colino, director of the UMU Unique Data Office.

Rector Luján publicly thanked the work carried out by the Office of the Single Data, and praised the way in which "Professor José Colino is fulfilling a mandate that I gave him: that the University of Murcia is the most transparent in Spain to the time to say what you do with data, and we already are. "

He affirmed that only having sufficient quality information can make informed decisions in our institution.

When the resources are public, he added, blind sticks cannot be given, "we have to know exactly what is due and what can be done, and try to make each one of our decisions correct," he said, adding that "dispose of these tools is essential, it is a real gift, a Christmas gift. "

Against the 'fake news'

The rector added that having quality information has another very necessary function in the present times: "Build the barriers in defense of that authentic drama of modern society that are the 'fake news': many unfounded opinions are launched that can do a lot of damage, especially in institutions such as the University of Murcia, whose greatest good is the reputation gained throughout our 104 years of history. "

Finally, he affirmed that "this tool helps to know faithfully issues such as teaching activity, research, personnel infrastructure, the gender gap, the problem of aging, their respective explanations or how these problems are being corrected."

In that sense, the Secretary General of the Fancisco University Antonio González Díaz also expressed his opinion that "the knowledge of these data puts us in a position to contribute to the improvement of the UMU".

The richest information

For his part, Professor José Colino, director of the Office of the Single Data, emphasized the name of the law under which this Office is protected: "Transparency Law, access to public information and good governance", legal norm that makes an express mention to public universities, whose basic objectives in this field are to facilitate the diagnosis of the situation in which the different areas of the UMU are in order to apply the appropriate therapies, as well as guarantee greater transparency, "because we are a public institution and we are obliged to be accountable to the different levels of the university community and also, above all, to the society that, with its tax effort, finances most of our spending. "

Professor Colino insisted on the objective of this work: "convert the data into managed information assets", finally remarking that "there is no university that has information on its website as rich as that of the UMU".

According to the Vice Chancellor for Studies, the reliability of these data allows, once placed at the service of the various vice-rectors, "they help a lot in making decisions and designing future plans."

According to the Vice Chancellor, Administration and Management of Companies, Law and Primary Education, with 415, 370 and 360 respectively were the degrees with the most offer of places in this course 2019-2020, for a total offered at the University of Murcia of 6,892.

Medicine, Nursing, Veterinary and Psychology, the most demanded

Medicine is, by far, the most demanded career, with 2,475 applications in first option, followed by Nursing (Murcia Campus), with 1064, Veterinary with 747 and Psychology with 659. On the contrary, the least requested were Geography and Ordination of Territory and Information and Documentation, with 12 and 19 applications in first option.

There is the circumstance that of the 15,621 demands of places in grade in the current course, the 12 titles of health sciences account for 45 percent of the total, despite the fact that only 17.6 percent of the places are assigned offered.

More women than ever in the history of the UMU

Of the 27,481 new registrations registered this course, the fact that 62'20 percent corresponds to women and the remaining 37'80 to men stand out.

This is the highest percentage of women of the decade, and almost certainly, the history of the University of Murcia.

PCEO ADE-Law, Translation and Interpretation and PCEO Mathematics / Computer Science, the most required in the first option

Regarding the adequacy rate, that is, the percentage relationship that exists between the number of students enrolled who chose the degree in first option and the number of students enrolled, both PCEO ADE-Law, the degree in Translation and Interpretation and PCEO Mathematics / Computing made full, since one hundred percent of the students enrolled chose this educational offer in the first option.

He was followed by students of Medicine and Audiovisual Communication, with 99'5 and 98'4 percent respectively.

On the contrary, Nursing Lorca and Logopedia, with 24'7 and 29'7 respectively were the ones that registered the lowest rate of adequacy.

Medicine, the highest grade

With regard to the degrees with the highest grade, the highest is that of the degree in Medicine, with 12'644, closely followed by PCEO Mathematics / Computer Science, with 12'513.

They are followed, although more than one point away, Dentistry, PCEO Infant Education / Primary Education and Biotechnology.

In the opposite place are the degrees in Political Science and Public Management, and Spanish Language and Literature, with 5'000 and 5.003 respectively.

Law (2,020), Primary Education (1,960), Business Administration and Management (1,734) and Medicine (1,347), were the careers whose enrollments passed the thousand.

Women drop out of studies half in relation to men

As for the exclusion rate, that is, students who are forced to abandon their studies in the first place because they do not exceed the minimum number of permanence credits, stand out from the bottom of their figures Infant Education (0.5), Studies English (1'4), Primary Education (2'3) and Social Education (2'5).

On the opposite side are Business Administration and Management (33'3), Chemical Engineering (23) and Information and Documentation (22'9).

By gender it is highly striking that while the exclusion rate amounts to 12'62 among men, that of women is below half: 5'58.

Translation and Interpretation and Nursing, the studies with the highest rate of performance

The highest rate of performance of all degrees, that is, the percentage ratio between credits passed and those enrolled in an academic year, is the Translation and Interpretation (91'7), which is followed by Nursing (Murcia Campus) (91), PCEO Journalism / Documentation (90'9) and Social Education (90'8).

On the opposite side is Business Administration and Management (56'2) and Sociology (58'4).

By gender, women are clearly ahead 72'26 for them and 61'58 for them.

Nursing-Lorca, Social Education and Translation and Interpretation, the fastest

The students who finish their studies before are those of Nursing (Campus of Lorca), Social Education and Translation and Interpretation, who invest in their careers 4'2 years on average.

On the contrary, the students who spend more time in finishing their studies are Business Administration and Environmental Sciences, with 6'2 and 6 years respectively, while those of Medicine and ADE-Law, with 6'1 and 6 are those who more time is spent on carts with more than 240 ETCS.

Masters and doctoral thesis

Of the 3,083 new master enrollment in the 2019-2020 academic year, 61'1 percent corresponds to women, a similar figure to those of the entire decade.

On the other hand, the graduates of masters were 1,874, of which 1,179 were women and 695 men.

Something similar could be said of the doctoral theses read, which amount to 214, of which 57 percent have been defended by women.

Teaching staff: triples the number of professors in a decade

The data of the teaching staff were presented by José Antonio López Pina, Vice Chancellor of Teachers.

The fact that, in the last decade, the number of professors has tripled, while that of professors has increased very slightly.

Even so, the number of women with respect to men on this scale continues to be very far away (253 versus 103).

With regard to university professors, the numbers have decreased slightly in the last ten years: 396 men compared to 457 in 2008. Also the number of full professors has registered a decrease, although percentage lower, from 309 to 291 .

A more aged PAS

Finally, Manager José Antonio Cascales Saseta, referred to the Administration and Services Personnel section.

Their number remains fairly stable in libraries and general scales in the last decade: 106 in the first group in 2011 and the same amount in 2018-2019, while in the second they have gone from 649 to 710.

The computer staff has increased in this time from 55 to 71, and the technical scales have risen from 293 to 354. The average age of these staff has increased in recent years, being the oldest, by sectors, those of libraries, where more than a third (34.9%) exceeds 55 years, while those of general scales exceed that age a fifth of them (20.7%).

On the contrary, those of general scales are the youngest (only 4'2% are over 55 years old, followed by technical scales (11'3%). These figures "make us assume the manager commented that there will be an important generational change in a short time, for what we must prepare, "he said.
