The University of Murcia organizes the second conference on Roma communities (17/12/2019)

The University of Murcia, through the Observatory of Social Exclusion, organizes this Wednesday, December 18, the 'II Conference on Gypsy Communities'.

The event, which will take place at the La Merced Campus at 18.30, will be chaired by the Vice Chancellor for Employment, Entrepreneurship and Society of the UMU, Alicia Rubio Bañón.

During the day, the book 'Risk of Exclusion of the Roma Population in Spain and Social Intervention' will be presented, in which the professors of the University of Murcia responsible for the direction and coordination of this publication, Manuel Hernández Pedreño, Francisco Eduardo Haz Gómez and Marta Gutiérrez Sánchez, will take stock of the main results obtained in the study.

The book 'Risk of Exclusion of the Roma Population in Spain and Social Intervention' is the culmination of two years of work carried out by the Research-Action team with Roma communities of the Observatory of Social Exclusion.

The study is shaped as an extensive monograph on the Roma population, as it addresses demographic, cultural, identity and social aspects, while analyzing the institutional response.

The publication analyzes the main dimensions of the social situation of the Roma population: employment, education, health, income, housing, participation and socio-family networks.

In the words of Professor Hernández Pedreño "it is an extensive multidisciplinary research that aims to raise awareness of the evolution of the social risk of a part of the Spanish population, which has traditionally been discriminated against and in a high degree of social vulnerability."

For its elaboration, statistics from surveys on Integration and Social Needs of the FOESSA Foundation (2007, 2013 and 2018) have been used, as well as interviews with professionals of research and social intervention in Spain and the Region of Murcia.

Pedreño adds that "factors such as the economic crisis of 2008 have aggravated the situation of the Roma population who, unlike the rest of the population, have seen their risk levels increased."

The book indicates that the balance of the last decade is quite negative for the Roma population, as the results of the 2018 FOESSA survey show the persistence of exclusion levels above 60 percent in the fields of employment, health and housing ;

and close to 50 percent in education.

"These data question the efficiency of social policies towards the Roma population, being necessary a deep reflection on the causes that prevent their promotion and social integration," concludes the professor.

Like all the conferences organized by the Observatory of Social Exclusion, its purpose is to encourage debate and to convey a greater knowledge of our social reality, beyond the academic field, being open assistance to the entire Murcian society.
