The UMU shows its renewable energy facilities to chemistry students within the framework of ODSessions (13/12/2019)

The ODSesiones project of the University of Murcia has organized a guided visit to the renewable energy facilities located on the Espinardo Campus for a group of students from the Faculty of Chemistry on Friday.

Currently, the UMU is self-sufficient in 16% of clean energy, thanks to its commitment to photovoltaic and thermal-, geothermal and biomass solar energy.

The objective of the institution is to exceed 20% of self-supply in 2020, as established by the European Council in 2007. In 2018, annual production was almost 3 million kilowatts per hour, a figure that will remain in this exercise.

The Vice Chancellor for Social Responsibility and Transparency, Longinos Marín;

the coordinator of the Infrastructure Campus, Antonio Carrasco;

the professor of the Faculty of Chemistry, Mariano Alarcón;

the head of electricity of the Technical Unit, Alberto Requena;

and the commercial manager of the company Sol Sureste, Francisco Cervantes, have been responsible for conducting this guided tour, which has been extended for two hours by the Espinardo Campus.

In the first place, the students have been able to know the photovoltaic solar energy installations of the University Social Center and the faculties of Psychology, Fine Arts, Labor Sciences and Social Work, as well as those located next to the pool and the animal farm.

Then they have visited

the solar thermal energy facilities located in the Espinardo Campus.

The tour has continued through the biomass boilers found in the UMU pool.

Later, the group of students has known the bioclimatic greenhouse with geothermal use and, finally, the generation of solar cold by absorption.

The UMU is a pioneer in Spain in its commitment to renewable energy, a project that has led the Sustainable Campus for 12 years.

After organizing thematic activities on 'End of poverty' (SDG 1), 'Zero hunger' (SDG 2), 'Health and Wellbeing' (SDG 3), 'Quality education' (SDG 4), 'Gender equality '(SDG 5),' Clean water and sanitation '(SDG 6), this month SDG sessions focus until December 19 on' Affordable and non-polluting energy '(SDG 7).
