The UMU Cloister approves the honorary doctorate to economist Paul de Grawe, who warned in 1998 of the crisis of the Spanish banking system (10/12/2019)

The Cloister of the University of Murcia, meeting this afternoon at the paraninfo, today approved the award of the Honoris Causa doctorate to economist Paul de Grawe, as well as granting the Gold Medal of the center of studies to the ONCE Foundation.

Likewise, the president of the commission of academic distinctions, has urged the cloister to grant from now on to all the rectors, once their mandate has ended, the Gold Medal of the institution.

The meeting has begun with the report of the Rector José Luján on the professors awarded in recent months with different awards for their research work.

Among the information offered to the cloister, the presence at the Climate Summit, during the two weeks of the event, of Professor Teresa Vicente, expressly invited by the United Nations.

The rector also highlighted the important effort being made by the university to fill the Transparency Portal with content, and commented that the deadlines set for the elaboration of the new statutes of the University of Murcia, of so that during the spring of 2020 the amendments to the project may be discussed and that at the beginning of the summer of that same year, the proposal of new statutes may be voted on by the members of the cloister.

ONCE Foundation

Attendees at the cloister today voted to grant the institution's Medal of Honor to the ONCE Foundation for its high social values, national and international recognition, its investments in technological innovation, human resources and social capital to improve the quality of life of people with any type of disability, their defense of the rights of all people, especially the disabled.

It has also highlighted the collaboration that develops with the UMU in various actions, a collaboration that began in 2004, which made the teaching center the first public institution in the Region that evaluated the accessibility of all its facilities.

Subsequently, the UMU began in 2011 the collaboration with the FONCE in the Inclusive Campus Program, being the only Spanish university that has done so in all its editions until today.

Since 2017, this collaboration has enabled 54 UMU students with disabilities to be able to carry out paid pre-work practices, as well as the All We Are Campus Program, created three years ago, which attempts to train people with intellectual disabilities.

Honoris Causa to Paul de Grauwe

The faculty has also voted to grant the Honoris Causa doctorate to Belgian Paul de Grauwe, currently a professor at the London School of Economics, an economist who conceives economics as a science at the service of human well-being, driving the quantitative expansion strategy applied by the ECB to fight the economic crisis.

In 1998, de Grauwe anticipated the crisis of the Spanish banking system.

According to Professor José García Solanes who has made the semblance of the new Honoris Causa in the Cloister, "if their ideas had been taken into account, Spain would have saved 65,000 million euros from the crisis."

Today's session also reported on the Quality Committee of the Cloister and the reports of the University Ombudsman and the 2018-19 Academic Year, as well as the Action Plan for the 2019-20 academic year.

Likewise, the Docentium model for teacher evaluation and the report of the Quality Committee of the Senate on it has been presented.
