Mothers for Climate Murcia and Ecologists in Action ask the City of Murcia for more sustainable parties (04/12/2019)

After knowing that, on the occasion of the Christmas holidays, the municipal corporation has planned the installation of eight machines that generate the snow effect, in addition to cold and smoke pyrotechnics equipment, in the Circular Square, Mothers for Climate Murcia has shown its concern in this regard, since they consider the installation of these unnecessary and dispensable equipment for the enjoyment and celebration of the Christmas holidays.

This has been transferred in a letter to Mayor José Ballesta, a claim to which Ecologists in Action of the Murcia Region has joined.

The significant expenditure of energy and water that this process of inhalation requires outside of its usual context of use and in a Region with scarce water resources is, in his opinion, inadmissible.

The municipality of Murcia boasts, among its virtues, an excellent climate most of the year that invites you to walk and enjoy its environment.

Snow simulation during the Christmas holidays is as out of place as installing large hot spots in the city of Vitoria (Global Green City) to simulate a Caribbean climate.

Therefore, from Mothers for Climate and Ecologists in Action they have asked the municipal team to reconsider their placement and urges them to take into account the environment in all their policies and projects, in order to ensure a sustainable social and environmental development that ensures a viable future for their daughters and sons.

They also request that, in future festive events, the municipal corporation take into account its environmental impact and therefore have made different proposals for planning such as ensuring that the lighting that is installed does not produce light pollution;

promote the use of reusable or biodegradable dishes by taking advantage of the installation of the organic container in the city;

recommend to the HORECA sector that only offer straws when required and that if they do, they are biodegradable;

promote water from public sources to avoid generating containers, etc.

They understand that the corporation only needs a prudential time to implement them since they are sure that a city that aspires to be a European Green Capital must have measures like these in its priority agenda.
