Chemistry students of the UMU learn to design a latrine within the framework of the ODSesiones project (28/11/2019)

The NGO Arquitectura Sin Fronteras (ASF) Levante has given this Thursday, within the framework of the ODSesiones UMU project, a practical workshop for the construction of a double latrine dry latrine for about twenty students of the Faculty of Chemistry.

The goal of compost latrines is to treat feces without using water to produce safe, stable and solid fertilizer.

In this way, they reduce pollution, promote water savings and generate a useful product in developing countries.

The engineer and volunteer of ASF Levante, Miguel Soriano, explained that "in countries like Senegal defecating outdoors is a natural thing. Consequences? Presence of bacteria such as e-coli in waters that are later drunk."

"There is also a certain cultural rejection of water chlorination, since certain communities believe it affects fertility. Working to change those beliefs needs a long process and continued work by NGOs," said Soriano.

The workshop has emphasized the need for latrinization of developing countries, as well as isolated and off-center population outbreaks of the planet.

In parallel, students have done a practice in groups where they presented their latrine model, taking into account the integral water cycle in places such as Vietnam, Senegal, Guatemala or even in the Region of Murcia itself.

Arquitectura Sin Fronteras is a Spanish NGO that defends the right to a habitat.

Founded in Barcelona in 1999 by a group of architects, its objective is to raise public awareness of poverty, education, health or environmental quality.

Likewise, it is dedicated to local and international cooperation in countries such as Senegal, Guatemala or Nicaragua.

After organizing thematic activities on 'End of poverty' (SDG 1), 'Zero hunger' (SDG 2), 'Health and Wellbeing' (SDG 3), 'Quality education' (SDG 4) and 'Gender equality '(SDG 5), this November, SDG sessions focus on' Water and Sanitation '(SDG 6).
