First actions of the 2030 Foresta Plan in schools

Specifically, this week the planting of 20 specimens is being carried out in the courtyard of the Pintor Pedro Cano educational center, in El Palmar, which is broken down into 14 mulberry trees, of the genus' morus alba ', and in 6 copies of' bauhinia variegata ', known as the' orchid tree '.

For their part, the workers are also working at the Juan XXII school in El Ranero, where they are planting 5 mulberry trees and 6 bahuinias.

The 2030 Forest Plan is being carried out in phases in both schools, without interfering with the recess time of the students.

Over the next few months, municipal workers are expected to plant about 80 new specimens, distributed in the aforementioned educational centers.

Thanks to this action, a total of 1,178 schoolchildren from both schools will have more shadow spaces.

Specifically, 740 students correspond to the Juan XXIII center, and 438 correspond to the Pintor Pedro Cano center.

During the next decade, the City of Murcia will implement the Forest Plan in more schools.

Distribution of the new 100,000 trees in the municipality

Throughout this decade, until 2030, the 100,000 new copies will be distributed through eight strategic projects, which are the following:

-Murcia Rio II.

It will house 50% of the new plantations, 50,000 trees that will extend along 27 km of the riverbed and 14 districts, in the new large metropolitan parks, areas of stay and meanders.

-Greenways.

Approximately 10% of the copies of the 2030 Forestry Plan will be planted on the Vía Verde during the next 10 years.

Currently 1,336 copies have already been planted.

-Corvera.

The City of Murcia, together with the Morus Alba Environmental Association, has already planted more than 1,000 new trees in Corvera, with the aim of creating a native forest.

It is a repopulation that is being carried out through endemic Mediterranean species.

-Parks, music and action.

It is a program to encourage outdoor activities in parks and gardens of the municipality of Murcia, encouraging and encouraging healthy activities and respect for the environment.

In this sense, the 2030 Forestry Plan contributes to the realization of workshops for planting trees and shrubs.

-Public educational centers.

The 2030 Forest Plan will involve the planting of some 2,000 new specimens distributed in a hundred schools in the municipality, new shadow spaces that can be enjoyed by some 20,000 schoolchildren.

-Older center.

The objective of this project is the planting of trees in the immediate vicinity of the social centers of the elderly.

-Terra Natura.

The City Council has launched a reforestation campaign that will expand the green areas of the animal park within this complex.

-Barrios and districts.

Thanks to the Forest Plan, the districts and neighborhoods of the municipality will have up to 15,000 new trees, which will be planted at street level.

They will also be distributed in squares, boulevards and municipal gardens.

-Medianas and Roundabouts.

The trees will be replaced in the medium and roundabouts of the municipality that no longer have their trees.

An x-ray of the current state of the copies of the municipality

The Forest Plan 2030 also includes the first Master Plan for Woodland of Murcia, which involves an evaluation and audit of the different trees in the municipality, providing an x-ray of the current status of the specimens.

Thanks to the Master Plan, which was launched five months ago, the City Council is carrying out an exhaustive review of more than 5,600 copies that exceed 12 meters high, which will be examined at least every six months.

Of the total, 900 are trees that, due to their characteristics and age, are classified as unique.

Through this Plan, 500 diagnostic and instrumental tests will be carried out on the trees that need them.

Likewise, and in parallel, the municipal operators periodically review the 900 singular trees mentioned, distributed throughout the municipality of Murcia.

Currently, Murcia has about 4 million square meters of green areas and 116,000 trees.

Native trees have priority

In this municipal strategy, priority is given to the planting of native varieties, which adapt to the climate of the municipality and its thermal individuals –Murcia is characterized by having a large temperature difference between day and night, up to 14 degrees, during the Spring and autumn months.

In addition, at the time of planting, deciduous trees will have preference, since they reduce the effects of global warming and nourish and fertilize the soil, and bet will be planted at street level - lined with alignment -, with the objective to provide more shadow spaces to pedestrians.

In urban environments, trees reduce the effects of climate change and lower CO2, lower temperature, favor biodiversity and beautify the landscape.

The five axes of the 2030 Forest Plan

The plantations of this great municipal plan correspond to five axes:

1) Mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere.

A tree absorbs up to 150kg of CO2 per year.

They are excellent filters for urban pollutants and small particles, and regulate the flow of water and improve its quality.

2) Shadow creation and temperature improvement.

The strategic placement of trees in urban areas can lower the temperature between 2 and 8 degrees.

Trees around buildings reduce air conditioning needs by 30% and save between 20 and 50% of heating.

3) Promote greater urban biodiversity of species in the municipality.

Trees provide habitat, food and protection to plants and animals, produce edible fruits by local wildlife and birds, as well as interesting flowers for bees and other pollinators.

4) Health improvement.

Not only because of its filtration effects of contaminating particles and combating climate change, since it is proven that spending time near trees reduces blood pressure and stress, and improves physical and mental health.

5) Landscaping and beautification of the city and districts.

Parks and gardens and urban landscaping make 'City brand', constitute a tourist claim and can increase the value of the surrounding properties up to 20%.
