The PSOE proposes recognition to researchers and academics linked to Murcia to serve as a reference for today's young women (27/11/2019)

The socialist councilor Antonio Benito urges that "women scientists be female references that inspire our society and serve as an example for our daughters"

He proposes to the Plenary that a commemorative element to Marie Curie be installed in the Hotel Victoria building or that future street modifications include names of scientists or academics such as Margarita Salas, María Moliner or Piedad de la Cierva

The Municipal Socialist Group, aware of the importance of the work of the female researcher, will present a motion with a battery of proposals in the next plenary so that the city of Murcia commemorates and recognizes the work of researchers and academics linked to our municipality.

Taking advantage of the fact that the 152 anniversary of the birth of the renowned Marie Curie, the socialist councilor, Antonio Benito, has been celebrated this November, he considers it appropriate to value the work of women in the scientific field.

"Although this distinguished researcher is more than known for her brilliant career, few know of her relationship with our city. Marie Curie visited us in 1931, stopping for lunch at the well-known Hotel Victoria, where she was greeted by some authorities as the rector of the UMU, José Lostau, "explains Benito, who adds that" beyond the anecdote, what this event shows us is the lack of attention we have given to women researchers. "

Women have played a fundamental role in the development of all areas.

If the current society has been able to reach the current levels of development it has been thanks to these female referents, that is why it is important that they be recognized.

"There are women without whom Murcia today would not be explained. It might seem that we want to look to the past. What we want is to understand how we have reached our present and continue moving towards a more competent future," says Benito.

In this sense, the councilman brings up one of the problems derived from this lack of recognition: gender bias when choosing degrees.

"Women who opt for research laboratories or disciplines such as science, technology, engineering or mathematics remain a minority. That is why we must do more, much more, so that these female referents serve as an example for our daughters."

In this sense, Benito will propose a series of agreements, including that a commemorative element to Marie Curie be installed in the Hotel Victoria building or that future street modifications include names of some Murcian scientists or academics such as Margarita Salas, María Moliner or Piety of the Deer.

"I also urge the City Council of Murcia to celebrate an official event on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in 2020 in which Murcia researchers and academics are recognized or who work in our municipality", concludes the mayor socialist.
