The UMU improves the conservation of protected natural areas (25/11/2019)

The results of the research provide new knowledge about the geological heritage of the Region of Huéscar (Granada).

These will serve to improve management plans and conservation measures for existing natural protected areas.

The municipalities of the north of Granada: Castilléjar, Castril, Galera, Huéscar, Orce and Puebla de Don Fadrique can, in this way, update their inventories of Geological Sites of Interest (LIG), as well as prepare municipal inventories on traditional uses of geodiversity and propose new natural monuments.

In total, 15 new LIGs and 10 places of interest have been described for the traditional knowledge and uses of geodiversity (LICUTG) in the Region of Huéscar, further improving the description of another 3 LIGs.

The analysis and evaluation of these will allow a proposal to be submitted to the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME), so that some of them are considered International Geological Sites of Interest (GEOSITES) and 17 others included, or reviewed, in the Spanish Inventory of Places of Geological Interest (IELIG).

Among the LIGs described, nine stand out because of their uniqueness, whose main or secondary contents are their soils.

In addition, four places have been proposed as candidates for natural monuments of Andalusia.

These are the caves of La Morería in Castillejar, the lagoon of Sierra Seca in Castril, the giant sismites of Galera and the Piedra de la Rendija in Puebla de Don Fadrique.

"This thesis constitutes a large research work that justifies, even more, the declaration by UNESCO of the Geopark of Granada," says the researcher at the University of Murcia (UMU) José Fidel Rosillo Martínez, author of the work.

Citizen awareness of the value of heritage

"The dissemination and promotion of the geological heritage of the Region of Huéscar has contributed to the public's awareness of the importance and value of it. In addition, the perception that the inhabitants of these towns have acquired of said heritage and their commitment and respect for its conservation has improved, "says the researcher.

Proof of this is, according to the expert, the success of the different days organized by the municipalities on geological heritage, "with the visit to some LIGs, included in this thesis, which have had an exceptional reception."
