Murcia, Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2020 with ´La Huerta de los 1.001 flavors´ (21/11/2019)

The candidacy of the capital of the Region is made with this national recognition thanks to 'La Huerta de los 1.001 flavors', which will be an important boost to tourism and support for catering establishments throughout the next year.

Jos Ballesta: "Murcia 2020 is the year of the projection of our City Brand through our gastronomy, one of the best in the Mediterranean Arc that is characterized by a high quality raw material, which finds its origin in the Huerta de Murcia ".

Gastronomy is the main reason to visit Murcia, according to tourists, who shot 30.83% last year compared to 2015.

The president of the regional government, Fernando Lpez Miras, and the mayor of Murcia, Jos Ballesta, presented today the Murcia project as 'Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2020', a recognition granted by the Spanish Federation of Hospitality next to the Spanish Federation of Journalists and Writers of Tourism (FEPET), and yesterday released by the Ministry of Tourism.

The Murcia candidacy has been made with this recognition thanks to the project 'La Huerta de los 1.001 flavors', which values ​​the raw material of Murcian cuisine and the quality of hotel services.

This recognition will suppose an important impulse to the national and international tourism and a decisive support to the professionals and establishments of restoration of the municipality, during all the next year.

“Our gastronomy is Marca Murcia, an intangible heritage that reflects the identity of the people of this land and has the flavor of the richness of our history and traditions.

Murcia 2020 is the year of the projection of our City Brand through Murcian cuisine to the world, ”said the mayor, who added that“ the candidacy of Murcia as the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2020 understands both the richness of our dishes and recipes like the social experience of sitting around a table as an inseparable element of our culture, of our identity. ”

The presentation ceremony, which was held at the Tourist Qualification Center, was attended by the president of the Spanish Capital of Gastronomy, Mariano Palacn;

the restorer Pablo Gonzlez Conejero;

the Minister of Tourism, Youth and Sports, Mara Cristina Snchez;

the Councilor for Employment, Economic Promotion and Tourism, Pedro Jos Garca Rex;

and the Councilor for Culture and Heritage Recovery, Jess Pacheco.

140 great gastronomic events

Throughout 2020, the municipality of Murcia will host the celebration of more than 5,000 events.

The City of Murcia has prepared a special program that includes a total of 140 great gastronomic events, linked to the four seasons: Lemon winter, The eternal spring flowers, Live the summer and Autumn with a glass of wine;

With special incidence during the holidays.

Gastronomy, the main reason to visit Murcia

Tourism figures in the municipality of Murcia recorded a steady rise since 2015. Last year, the total number of travelers in the municipality soared 30.83% compared to 2015 and overnight stays have increased in these three years a 35.75%, exceeding for the first time in the history of the municipality the barrier of 780,000.

In addition, the gastronomy is, after the monuments, the characteristic that tourists show that they liked the city the most.

According to the IAE census, there are a total of 2,500 catering activities and bars in the municipality.

Tourism to the region as a whole

The whole of the Region will benefit from this national recognition, with the celebration of events, the promotion of restaurants and products with OD and the diffusion of the gastronomic richness of each Murcian municipality.

The gastronomy of the Region combines the flavors of the sea with the vegetables of the Murcian garden, the perfect balance between a traditional and avant-garde cuisine.

The project 'Murcia, Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2020' highlights the following Murcia products: vegetables, salted meat (roe and mojama), imperial of Lorca, oil, fruits, ham from Murcian flatbread, products with DO, cheese from Murcia to wine, Calasparra rice, Murcia paprika, Jumilla pear, Murcia cheese, almond cured goat cheese, organic farming, Bullas, Jumilla, Yecla wines, from the land, etc.

Cream aubergines, caballitos, cantonal salad, Murcian salad, raw beans with bonito, seafood, marriage, michirones, garlic potatoes, partridges, pipirrana, Murcian ratatouille, octopus, grilled fresh cheese, 'split' tomato, tortillas, grilled vegetables, zarangollo, etc.

Typical dishes and desserts

The Region and the city will participate in a total of 12 national and international fairs with the image 'Murcia, Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2020': FITU, Madrid Fusion, Biofach, Nurenberg, Germany, Fine Sine Tourism Expo (Valladolid), Gourmet Hall Madrid, Alimentaria, Wine routes fair (Zenia), London Wine Fair, Organic Food Iberica, Madrid, Spanien am Maine, Munich, Fruit Fusion Madrid, World Travel Market.

In addition, the brand 'Murcia, Huerta de los 1001 Sabores' will be present, gaining visibility through advertising sponsorships in different events of interest, parties and public events, betting on the presence of the local product in general and that which has DO or PGI in particular.

The Gastronomic Seal '1001 Flavors - Region of Murcia' will be given continuity, a distinctive that recognizes both the defense of the regional product and the value of the good done and the relationship with the customer.

Training and counseling programs will also be held for those responsible and technicians of the municipalities and other entities related to gastronomic tourism, promoting the consumption of the products of the land and the feeling of pride, to convert both the general public and the professionals of the sector in the best prescribers of our gastronomy.
