The institution recovers the cult of the Dolorosa of San Lorenzo that has already begun an earlier Brotherhood, whose first references date back to the early nineteenth century

The Diocese of Cartagena has a new Brotherhood: the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows (Dolorosa de San Lorenzo) of Murcia.

This was ratified by Mr. José Manuel Lorca Planes, Bishop of the Diocese, in the Decree signed on October 15, 2019. Document to be published in the last Official Gazette of the Diocese of the current year.

On September 21, 2019, thanks to the unconditional support of the Parish of San Lorenzo, the dream of a group of young brothers became a reality.

After years of work and waiting, the Dolorosa de San Lorenzo went out for the first time in procession to the streets of Murcia.

A historical fact that has resulted in the constitution of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows.

The association recovers, thus, the cult of the Virgin of Sorrows of San Lorenzo that already began another previous brotherhood whose first references date back to the first third of the nineteenth century.

This is demonstrated by various news published in the press, such as that of Sunday, September 28, 1890, in the newspaper La Paz de Murcia, in which the following reference appears: “A pious septenary is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows in honor of her Glorious pains the brotherhood canonically erected in the parish of San Lorenzo de Murcia, which begins tomorrow 29 of the currents.

The titular image of the brotherhood - Our Lady of Sorrows (Dolorosa de San Lorenzo) -, was carved by the teacher Francisco Salzillo towards the year 1767 for the parish church of San Lorenzo Mártir de Murcia, where he has received worship to this day.

Another curiosity about the Brotherhood resides on the date chosen for its constitution.

At the express wish of the Consiliario, Don Alfredo Hernández, it was decided that it was October 15, 2019 -festivity of Saint Teresa of Jesus- because, in addition, the image of the Holy is in the Parish of San Lorenzo in front of the chapel of the hurt.

The act of inauguration of the new president and his Government Board, as well as the official presentation of the Brotherhood and his shield, will take place next Saturday, November 30, at 12 noon, in the Church of San Lorenzo Mártir de The city of Murcia.
