Students of the IES Licensed Francisco Cascales turn the Plenary Hall of the City Hall into the seat of the European Parliament (18/11/2019)

The Plenary Hall of the City Council has today been the scene of a session of the European Parliament conducted by the students of the IES Graduate Francisco Cascales de Murcia.

This is a project of the European Parliament Model, organized by the San Patricio Foundation for students of 1st Baccalaureate, where the objective is to know and develop dynamics of democratic institutions, as well as to encourage critical thinking and assumption among students of collective agreements.

The Councilors of Education and Infantile Schools, Belén López, and Urban Agenda and Open Government, Mercedes Bernabé, have been responsible for receiving the students in the town hall.

The councilors have welcomed them and praised the work they are developing.

“Our Plenary Hall thus becomes an important element of the learning process of these students.

Knowing that initiatives such as these, which favor debate and democratic culture, are being made in our educational centers, is a pride for us, â€says Councilwoman Belén López.

The students started the project with the formation of different commissions on Foreign Affairs, Employment and Social Affairs, Environment, Public Health and Food Security and Civil Liberties and Justice.

From there, they began to investigate a topic on which they had to write an essay and participate in a virtual forum with students from all over Spain.

The project has continued today in the Plenary Hall of the City Council with the simulation of a parliamentary session where the different commissions have discussed the problems raised.

Mercedes Barnabas has stressed that "activities of this type allow to know at the same time the operation of an institution such as the European Parliament, as well as to promote the development of transversal competences, such as teamwork, public speaking or critical capacity".

After this phase, four selected students will have the option of attending a session with other young people in the Congress of Deputies, in Madrid.

From there, 10 will be selected to carry out this same activity in Brussels.
