Avd. Don Juan de Borbón, among the urban areas with the most serious accidents in Spain (18/11/2019)

The Avenida Don Juan de Borbón, at its confluence with the Avenida Reino de Murcia (Los Cubos), is one of the 15 most dangerous red spots of the Spanish street map.

The first places are occupied by the M-40 in Madrid, at the height of the El Pardo Tunnels and the exits to Mercamadrid;

Avenida Diagonal, between Plaça Pius XII and Doctor Marañón (Camp Nou area), and the Recoletos-Castellana Axis, in Cibeles, Nuevos Ministerios and Santiago Bernabéu.

In the last 5 years, 2,360 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in the city and about 24,000 were seriously injured.

The Region of Murcia is, together with Navarra, the autonomous community where the mortality due to accidents has increased the most in recent years, as the number of deaths has doubled.

The most common accident in the city is a rear-end collision or side impact collision, which occurs at crossings and roundabouts due to distractions and no longer respecting safety priority or distance.

Cervical sprains (65%), herniated discs (15%) and knee sprains (10%) are the most common injuries in urban traffic accidents.

The Línea Directa Foundation makes its web page available to citizens to report dangerous points throughout the Spanish geography, whose location will be transferred to the competent administrations for review.

A crossing with poor visibility, a sign hidden by some bushes or a street with holes in the asphalt.

We all know places in the streets of our cities, which, due to traffic density, dangerous layout or lack of conservation, have become a risk for drivers and pedestrians.

Aware of this, the Línea Directa Foundation has identified the urban points that accumulate the most serious accidents of the entire Spanish street, always with the aim of fighting for road safety.

To this end, the Foundation has analyzed almost 500,000 accidents recorded by the DGT between 2013 and 2017 and more than 70,000 serious accidents attended by the Insurance Hotline, all of which occurred in urban areas and bypasses throughout the national geography.

The result, included in the study "Red Dots: traffic accidents in Spanish capitals", includes for the first time, not only the streets with more risk in our country, but also the specific sections in the city where there are more traffic accidents traffic.

The M-40 of Madrid at the height of the El Pardo Tunnels and the Mercamadrid exits (19 AB southbound and 20 northbound);

Diagonal Avenue in the section between Doctor Marañón and Plaça de Pius XII (Camp Nou area and several university faculties);

and the Recoletos-Castellana Axis in the surroundings of Cibeles, Nuevos Ministerios and Santiago Bernabéu are the most dangerous points of the Spanish street map.

But the existence of Red Dots is not, by far, an exclusive problem of Madrid and Barcelona.

Murcia is part of this top 15 of red dots with Avenida Don Juan de Borbón, at its confluence with Avenida Reino de Murcia (Los Cubos).

City accidents soar

The Línea Directa Foundation has also wanted to study the evolution of accidents in the city according to the official data of the General Directorate of Traffic, for which it has analyzed the almost 500,000 urban and interurban accidents that occurred between 2013 and 2017. The result is alarming, since that urban traffic accidents with victims have increased in Spain by 24% in the last 5 years, compared to + 0.5% of interurban roads.

In fact, in the last year there were almost 65,000 accidents in the city compared to 37,000 occurred on the road, which is almost double.

Regarding mortality data, between 2013 and 2017, 2,360 people lost their lives in urban traffic accidents, registering a 13% increase in the entire period.

In Murcia, the death toll has doubled, which is almost one hundred.

Also, in the national group, 24,000 people were seriously injured and another 77,000 suffered minor injuries.

The Region of Murcia is, together with Navarra, the autonomous community that most increased mortality in its urban areas in the last 5 years, as the number of deaths doubled.

On the opposite side are Castilla-La Mancha, Asturias and Castilla y León, which have reduced it and keep it well below the national average of 13%.

According to Francisco Valencia, General Director of the Línea Directa Foundation, “urban accidents have become the most forgotten in terms of road safety.

Its evolution in recent years has made it a priority for all the institutions that fight for road safety.

That is why, in addition to preparing our report on urban accidents, the Línea Directa Foundation has wanted to boost citizen participation with its own platform where all users can report the most dangerous places to move â€.

How are accidents in the city

The most common urban road accident usually occurs in roundabouts and crossings by rear reach or side impact, usually caused by distractions and by not respecting the safety distance or priority on the road.

As for the vehicle, the most common material damages occur in the rear and front of the car, specifically in the bumpers and fins, with an average cost of 1,200 euros.

As for the most frequent injuries, cervical sprains (65%) are the most frequent bodily injuries, followed by herniated discs (15%) and knee sprains (10%).

A platform in the city to report Red Points

The Línea Directa Foundation has created a complaint platform so that citizens can report those routes (“Red Pointsâ€) that, due to their layout, visibility or conservation status, can pose a danger to road safety.

Citizens can report the existence of these places by entering the address on the website of the Direct Line Foundation or geolocating the point through their computer, Tablet or Smartphone, completely anonymously and easily.

In addition, you can attach a brief explanation about the Point and provide a picture of the place.

After validating the Red Point and uploading it to its website, the Línea Directa Foundation will report its location to the competent Administration, so that it can assess its repair.

Citizens will also be able to check on the platform the location of the almost 70,000 serious claims whose data has been transferred in a grouped and anonymous manner by the Insurance Hotline.

These data have served as a basis to configure the Top 15 of Spanish roads with more traffic accidents.

On the web you can also check the claims that occurred in each locality, neighborhood or street of the country, as well as the Red Points uploaded by the rest of the users.
