José Ballesta: "This is the culmination of a City Project, a space that we return to Murcia converted into a social and family meeting point, in which we have tripled the number of existing trees and reduced traffic by 95% ".

More than 500 dancers will participate tomorrow Saturday at the grand opening party, which will last from 12.30 to 9.00 pm, with 8 concerts by Murcian bands and a great light show.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Youth and Sustainable Development, Rebeca Pérez, inaugurated today Phase II of Alfonso X El Sabio Avenue, the most important pedestrian itinerary of the 15,000m2 municipality, which runs along the monumental axis that connects the river and La Glorieta, with Belluga, Trapería and Santo Domingo Square until La Circular;

covering an area of 50,000 m2 (equivalent to 5 soccer fields).

“It is the culmination of a City Project, a space that we return to all Murcia converted into a social and family meeting point, clean and healthy, in which we have tripled the number of existing trees and reduced traffic in a 95%, â€reported José Ballesta.

This new boulevard in the heart of the city, patrimony of all Murcia, has also become a point of attraction for people who visit us from outside, integrating into the tourist itineraries that run through the BIC environment of the old town.

"It should also be noted that this is the first avenue of the municipality 100% accessible, so that traffic without barriers is guaranteed to people with reduced mobility, responding to Murcia groups of Disability," said the mayor.

Recovery of spaces for Murcia

The recovery of public spaces for Murcia is the constant that spreads the City Model that is part of the Murcia 2030 Strategy.

“Returning previously closed spaces, opening them for urban and social recovery, and creating new meeting points for people is the purpose of strategic projects such as Murcia Río, the Greenway, San Esteban, the Old Jail or the Artillery Barracks, to those that must be added Alfonso X El Sabio Avenue, â€recalled José Ballesta.

'Clean Air': 95% less traffic

The pedestrianization of healthy axes in urban environments is one of the measures included in the municipal strategy 'Clean Air', aimed at reducing pollution and effects of climate change through various fronts of action such as the commitment to clean means in the services of public transport and road cleaning, the Electric Vehicle and Bicycle Strategy, free alternative services to agricultural burns and the promotion of our green areas, such as the 2030 Forest Plan.

In fact, after the pedestrianization of the section between Santo Domingo and Jaime I, there has been a 95% reduction in traffic compared to that which circulated before the work, to the point that the vehicles that traveled through this avenue in one hour are same that currently travel this road throughout the day.

80% of the investment comes from European funds

Participation was a determining factor in the design process of the Alfonso X pedestrianization project, integrating the proposals and allegations of the different neighborhood and association groups, and agreeing with the technical observations of the Official College of Architects of the Region and the General Directorate of Cultural Property.

The pedestrianization of Alfonso X has been carried out in two stages: Phase I, from Santo Domingo to Jaime I (with an area of 7,600 m2) and a budget of 1.8 million euros, whose works began in February 2018 and concluded in October of the same year;

and Phase II (6,800 m2 8,217), from there to La Circular, with a budget of 2 million euros, whose work started last March.

This work, promoted by the Department of Youth and Sustainable Mobility, has been co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union, funds that the City of Murcia obtained thanks to its Strategy of City Murcia 2020.

“European funding was key.

It allowed us to finance 80% of the works, so that we have more funds to execute new projects in the municipality, â€said the mayor, who added that“ we will continue to attend European funding calls to continue the transformation process that we are carrying out with the consensus of Murcia. â€

The works have involved the execution of a comprehensive project that orders the entire environment and gives continuity to the bike lane.

In total, 72 orange trees and 11 palm trees, 119 planters have been planted along the avenue, 36 benches, 31 bins, 139 luminaires and 2 sets of 6 underground containers have been installed.

Rearrangement of Traffic in Phase II

The project has made pedestrian traffic compatible with road access to neighbors and services, not only in Alfonso X, but also towards Santa Clara streets to Gran Vía and Enrique Villar to the University.

The Jaime I crossing remains open for motor vehicles.

In parallel, but segregated and signposted, a two-way bike path runs through the entire ride.

In the perimeter streets to the performance, Plaza Preciosa, Jaime I and Gutiérrez Mellado, the placement of underground trash containers, taxi stops and loading and unloading areas has been resolved.

Access to restricted traffic is done through the vertical informational signaling prior to the turn towards Alfonso X and the placement of a license plate recognition camera that will be controlled from the Traffic Hall of the City of Murcia.
