Huermur denounces the inaction of the City Council and Culture before the abandonment of the medieval tower of Zarandona (13/11/2019)

Huermur already denounced almost six months ago the "chaos" that existed in the medieval tower of Zarandona and the Molino del Batán in the heart of Murcia, given the large number of graffiti, dirt, debris, and neglect that accumulates this monument declared Good of BIC Cultural Interest.

The association denounces new graffiti and damage to the monument, which is the only preserved medieval tower in the area of the perimeter garden of Murcia.

The conservationist collective criticizes that neither the City Council of Murcia nor the Ministry of Culture have moved a single finger in almost half a year since Huermur's denunciations, to put an end to this shameful unhealthy situation of a protected monument.

A situation of abandonment that is getting worse and worse.

Huermur points out that less than two years ago this monument was intervened by the City Council for its enhancement and restoration, but today it presents an outrageous state of conservation, due to little interest in its conservation and effective protection.

Therefore, they will expand the complaint that was filed in June before the Civil Guard Seprona, and before the other administrations involved.

The Association for the Conservation of the Garden and Heritage of Murcia (Huermur) denounces the inaction and lack of solutions of the City of Murcia and the Ministry of Culture, before the embarrassing abandonment of the medieval tower of Zarandona, dating from the century XII, and the unique Molino del Batán that is next to it on the Azarbe Mayor del Norte, also abandoned and full of garbage.

Huermur already reported almost six months ago to the Civil Guard Seprona the "chaos" that surrounds and affects this protected and declared Monument of Cultural Interest BIC.

But the City of Murcia has not taken any action to improve, remove graffiti, and take care of this valuable heritage of the garden of Murcia that is owned.

In the same sense, Huermur criticizes that the Ministry of Culture has not even processed the complaint filed for these events, as the group was able to verify in a recent visit to the General Directorate of Cultural Property last week, that this regional administration had limited to open a folder and to put inside Huermur's writing and the Civil Guard report, without giving him any kind of procedure to solve these problems.

From Huermur they criticize that in less than two years since the questionable restoration of the medieval tower carried out by the City of Murcia, and that he even received the visit of Mayor Ballesta and the main floor of the Department of Urbanism, Environment and Huerta, to all hype and saucer, this monument of the garden of Murcia has degraded to an unimaginably embarrassing point.

All this, they indicate from Huermur, for the lack of an adequate municipal maintenance, a nonexistent surveillance of the Local Police, and a null control of the Ministry of Culture.

The conservation entity also highlights the serious state of conservation of the unique Molino del Batán on the Azarbe Mayor del Norte, which is completely surrounded by garbage, debris and weeds.

A mill, they point out from the collective, which is also part of the BIC of the medieval tower, and which is cataloged in the PGOU of Murcia, but which presents an unfortunate and shameful state of conservation without offering any solution to this problem.

Given the unfortunate situation of this cultural legacy located in the orchard of Murcia, and given that neither the City Council of Murcia, nor the Ministry of Culture seems to care in the least about its poor condition, Huermur will expand the complaints that he already presented in June, and will send to the Civil Guard Seprona an updated photographic dossier with the new damages and the current state of abandonment of the protected monument, requesting the measures that are appropriate to solve this problem, and if appropriate, to be transferred to the Prosecutor's Office.

A BIC environment that the Ministry of Culture is not processing

The group notes that the General Directorate of Cultural Property has been pending for months the processing of the BIC protection environment that this monument of the Zarandona tower must have, based on Law 4/2007 on Cultural Heritage, and that Huermur requested over a year ago

But today Culture has not shown signs of life, and this important cultural legacy still does not adapt to the Heritage Law.

Huermur also criticizes that the City of Murcia will allow this unique heritage of the garden of Murcia to be encased within a roundabout, as established by the current PGOU, to build the roads that will give access to nearby urban plans that are also in full orchard.

Faced with this situation, Huermur once again urges Mayor Ballesta, and the Town Hall and Town Hall Councilor to reconsider, and annul the roundabout projected around the protected monument, since its construction will be an outrage against Murcia's full-fledged heritage.
