The Artillery Barracks opens in December as a creative production center for Murcian and international artists (13/11/2019)

José Ballesta: "The Barracks aspires to become a cultural symbol of Murcia, with open and participatory spaces for the creation and promotion of Murcian talent; a space with permanent activity through which more than 5,000 people will pass through 2020".

The City Council has rehabilitated pavilions 1 and 2 of the Artillery Barracks, which as of January will offer 75 artistic residences, in which more than a hundred creators can participate annually.

The new space will also host workshops for the whole family, exhibitions and artistic demonstrations, as well as activities in collaboration with educational centers, public and private entities.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, accompanied by the Councilor for Culture and Heritage Recovery, Jesús Pacheco, presented the cultural project of the Artillery Barracks Creative Production Pavilions, a new cultural center of reference of more than 5,400 square meters, which In December it opens its doors as a space for artistic production, favoring the encounter, learning and dialogue between Murcian creators and from all over the world.

New Cultural Model of Murcia

The implementation of this great cultural project is one of the main actions framed within the municipal strategy Murcia is Culture, which implies a change in the management of artistic municipal spaces.

The strategy will facilitate the development of creative projects, since artists will be able to present their artistic initiatives at any time of the year, facilitating their production and dissemination, proposing exhibitions, workshops and creative projects to develop in the municipal centers.

The Artillery Barracks will be the first center to promote the new management model.

Specifically, the Creative Production Pavilions will open to the public on December 13 with the special Christmas program.

The annual program, for its part, will be published in early 2020.

To develop this project, the City Council of Murcia rehabilitated pavilions 1 and 2 of the Artillery Barracks, in order to promote research, production, training and dissemination of creation in all its disciplines.

The works have meant a total investment of 3,148,264 euros, and have been co-financed by 80% by the European Regional Development Fund (Feder) and the European Social Fund (ESF), within the framework of the Operational Sustainable Growth 2014 program -2020, with the DUSI Strategy.

Creative thinking in all its aspects: literature, music, design, performing arts and new technologies

The main objective of this innovative project, which involves the opening of a new interdisciplinary work center, is to support the creators in all its stages, welcoming creative thinking in all its disciplines, such as the performing, audiovisual, plastic and literary arts. .

In the pavilions there will be creative residences, projects of different disciplines, such as literature, music, design, performing arts and new technologies, as well as activities for the whole family, training courses and workshops, specialized in lighting , sound, computer programs, music production, 3D design and video games, among others.

Also, the Barracks will host artistic exhibitions and exhibitions.

Among cultural managers, resident artists, participants in the activities and the general public.

An Advisory Board with artists of recognized national and international prestige

An interdisciplinary team forms the Advisory Council of the Barracks, which has artists of great relevance at the national and international level, who will be in charge of guiding the projects that are developed in the center, as well as making them known both inside and outside our borders. .

The event was attended by members of this Advisory Council, such as graphic designer Jorge Martínez, Murcian chef Pablo González-Conejero, architect Javier Peña, photographer Mónica Lozano, theater expert Nieves Pérez, cultural manager Belén Conesa, writer of Comics Salva Espín, the music production expert Lucía Zuloaga and the expert robotics engineer Humberto Martínez.

The dancer and choreographer José Carlos Martínez and the fashion designer Constanza Mas are other artists that make up this interdisciplinary team.

75 creative residences for more than a hundred artists

Each year, the pavilions will host an average of 75 creative residences, in which artists can participate individually or collectively, developing their initiatives in spaces reserved for this program.

To carry out its projects, the Barracks will have a wide schedule, since it will remain open from the early hours of the morning until the evening, without interruptions at noon.

It is planned that more than a hundred artists participate in the residences annually.

This residency program will be open to Murcian artists and creatives from all over Spain and other countries.

The bases for participating in creative residences will be presented in the coming days.

The Barracks will thus become a meeting place between artists, cultural managers and visitors.

"Through creativity, in addition, neighborhood participation will increase and the transformation of the environment will be encouraged, making it a kinder space for all Murcia," said José Ballesta.

5,400 square meters for art

Residents can develop their projects in open spaces, allowing the exchange of opinions, reflections and perspectives, and creating enriching and motivating experiences.

Also, the rehabilitated pavilions, of more than 5,400 square meters, will have multipurpose rooms to hold meetings between artists and neighbors.

Collaboration with private entities, public administrations and academic centers

Research, development and innovation will also be promoted from the Barracks, articulating projects in collaboration with universities, technology centers and private companies, with the aim of managing and promoting culture jointly, between public and private entities.

Coordinated projects will also be carried out with other cultural centers located in the Barracks, such as the Párraga Center, the Conservatory of Music, the Municipal Library and the University of Murcia, as well as other municipal management centers.

In addition, the residents of the pavilions will take their work to the educational centers, so that schoolchildren can talk and meet the artists, expanding the programming of the Creative Production Pavilions in schools and institutes of the municipality.

Culture at street level

Another of the differentiating elements of this great project will be the realization of artistic exhibitions in the street, since the works developed in the pavilions will be disseminated throughout society.

For this reason, the pavilions will have ephemeral mobile infrastructures and 'packs' will be created that will contain the necessary elements for small-scale outdoor activities.
