The PSOE denounces the breach of the Accessibility Law in different municipal buildings (12/11/2019)

The Socialist Municipal Group denounces the breach of the Accessibility Law in different municipal buildings, where dozens of users are served every day.

Specifically, the councilor Enrique Lorca has visited the property where the Statistical service, Saavedra Fajardo and the El Palmar Library are housed.

In these three buildings the only possibility of access is the stairs.

For Lorca, "it is not only a breach of the Law, but a lack of respect for both users and the staff themselves."

Regarding the Statistical building, located on Calle Puerta Nueva, 10, it breaches Law 4/2017, of June 27, on Universal Accessibility of the Region of Murcia, article 16. However, as the councilor explains, it is not governed either by the requirements of the 1st Municipal Universal Accessibility Plan of the City of Murcia (published March 28, 2019 in the BORM).

Specifically, "Objective 4.3.2 is not met, which consists in improving accessibility in public buildings where there is talk of carrying out an inspection and intervention protocol in public buildings in 2019 to improve accessibility."

Therefore, the premises do not have an elevator to access the 1st and 2nd floor. In addition, on the ground floor, where the Empadronamiento service is located, it also does not have a public toilet for users with reduced mobility.

This property also includes the Statistics and Notifications Service and the Economic-Administrative Council of Murcia.

The Library of El Palmar, the only one existing for a population of 23,000 inhabitants, also does not have an elevator, as is the case for accessing the third floor of the municipal building of Saavedra Fajardo, where different services of the City Hall are also located, therefore, the councilman says that "perhaps it is more urgent to achieve full accessibility in these buildings than to spend around 40,000 euros in the reform of the office of Mayor Ballesta."

Real equality between citizens also consists in facilitating mobility to neighbors who have difficulties and, at the same time, a city that wants to boast a modern, intelligent, advanced and innovative image can no longer delay the works and measures necessary to that accessibility ceases to be a claim and becomes, finally, a reality.

The City of Murcia, as an administration, must be the first to set an example. "

Likewise, Lorca recalls that the City Council received the Queen Letizia Award for Universal Accessibility for the promotion of measures and policies aimed at promoting the inclusion of people with disabilities, however, "it seems that everything has been in a momentum because we observe and verify that There is so much to do".
