Seminars of the University of Murcia at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (12/11/2019)

The University of Murcia organizes in collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) of China a series of seminars with the aim of promoting academic exchange, joint research and student mobility.

These seminars are being held from November 11 to 13 at the Asian university under the title 'Humanities, Business and Law: Shanghai Jiao Tong University-The University of Murcia Bilateral Workshop'.

The workshop has as its main themes: 'Spanish Dialogue on Humanities', 'Sustainable development in a new era: China and Spain' and 'Chinese-Spanish collaboration in legal studies'.

Through this meeting, the two universities intend to deepen the academic dialogue on Humanities and Social Sciences, in addition to promoting cooperation in more fields.

Staff from the Cervantes Institute and ICEX in China also participate.

During the opening day, which has had the presence of the Counselor of the Economic and Commercial Office of Spain in Shanghai, as well as academic authorities of SJTU, the importance of a strong academic and research connection between both institutions in order to lay the foundations for joint collaboration projects.

On the day held on Monday, Pascual Cantos, dean of the Faculty of Letters, toured the Humanities studies at the UMU.

Professor Ana Foulquié, from the Translation and Interpreting Department, focused her presentation on Spanish as a translation language, and Professor Óscar de Jódar, from the Department of English Studies, outlined the history of flamenco, not just as a type of singing but as a cultural manifestation.

Following the presentations and meetings held, at the proposal of the dean of the Faculty of Humanities of SJTU, the project of publishing a book in Spanish and in Chinese on literary and philosophical figures has been discussed, as the first joint collaboration project in the field of Letters.

On the other hand, the UMU representatives will take advantage of their stay in Shanghai to visit two more universities in order to explore possibilities for collaboration;

specifically with the Shanghai University of Political Science and Law and the Shanghai Normal University.

These academic meetings are the result of contacts made during the institutional mission held in October last year in China and which was led by Rector Luján.
